More bad news for the anti-gun crowd as the Brady Campaign sells its member list to raise cash
Examiner.com [Indianapolis] ^ | June 11, 12:30 PM | Rob Reed

Posted on 06/11/2010 6:50:34 PM PDT by archy

As the American public increasingly turns away from the gun control agenda, the leading gun control group has been forced to sell its membership list to raise money.

While NRA membership nears 4 million members, the flagship gun control group, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, has been revealed to have just over 50,000 members.

The once-secret Brady Campaign membership numbers were discovered when gun rights activist and blogger Joe Huffman found that the Brady Campaign was selling its membership list for direct mail marketing.

As Huffman points out, 50,000 members is far below the "about half a million members" that Michael D. Barnes, then Brady president, claimed in a 2004 interview.

That means that either Barnes misstated the "about half a million" number back in 2004 or, if that membership number was accurate, that about 450,000 former members of the Brady Campaign have left the anti-gun group in the last six years.

Either way, it's the latest in a string of bad news for the gun control group.

In my recent article, The tide turns in the battle for gun rights as the Brady Campaign withers away, I wrote about the staggering drop in donors, funding and expenditures for the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence - Voter Education PAC.

This includes a fund raising drop from $1.7 million raised in the 2000 election cycle to just over $15,000 raised in the 2008 election cycle.

The Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence - Voter Education PAC is the arm of the Brady Campaign that directly receives and distributes funds to political candidates to influence elections.

Not surprising that a 50,000 member group screams so loud as to actually get noticed.

The Brady Bunch will receive stimulus cash for “educational purposes” just before the election.

I’m not so sure this is a desperation move. I thnk this is a dangerous time for the left and a list like this has a lot of value for forces trying to reach sympathetic voters on the left. It’s simply a good time to sell.

The Brady Campaign: badly outnumbered and outgunned.

This can only be a negative for the Brady group. I see pro-gun groups obtaining this list and using it to good use.
Of course there are other not so law-abiding groups that may obtain this list and use it for nefarious uses. I see nothing but bad use for the uses of this group of people.

Unfortunately, that is what happens when you look for monetary gain from your membership.

Mailing list rentals usually have restrictions on their use. Even if a pro-gun group used a straw renter, that party could get in big trouble if the list were used for other than its intended purpose.

In some cases, the group selling the list is in charge of the mailing as well (after doing things like weeding out duplicates, and omitting people on do not mail lists, etc.)

I’m sure that you are probably right... I was thinking about those that get the list through nefarious sources...they always do.

I am not really sure that many of those would not put those lists to good use...but maybe I’m wrong (for legal reasons).

Do you really think criminals would be interested in the names and addresses of wealthy liberals who don't have guns?

Why,whatever would they do with that info?

Brady Campaign sells its member list to raise cash

With so few members, what did they get? A couple of hundred bucks?

what makes you think THEY don't have guns... or at least their private or publicly funded guards have them?

It's the little people's guns they want grabbed.

The brady campaign is an organization dedicated to eliminating a certain weapon, not about punishing those who use those weapons. What they don’t understand is that if a certain weapon is eliminated, the bad guys will just pick up another weapon. It’s like a dog chasing it’s tail. They will have to campaign against machetes, tire irons, pocket knives, 2X4’s, hammers, ice picks and on and on. Seriously misguided bunch of children.

a mailing list of 50,000 probably means less than 5,000 actual dues paying members.

Washington staffers, think tank members, media members all on the list without sending a penny to Brady.

Second Amendment Sisters was formed to rally against the Million Mom March back on Mother's Day 2000. We are now 10 years old and in good shape with a membership that continues to grow. It is very heartening indeed to see this news. SAS would never sell it's membership list--not even those who 's memberships have expired and were not renewed.
