Hillary for Defense? The president may also want her for veep to rally the base in 2012.
The Wall Street Journal ^ | June 12, 2010 | Leslie Gelb

Posted on 06/11/2010 8:16:17 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The biggest political surprises often hide in plain sight. President Obama might be planning one because his re-election could hinge on it. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be at the heart of this blockbuster. Here's how and why it could happen.

Step one may come in a year or so when Defense Secretary Robert Gates retires as clouds darken over Afghanistan and possibly Iraq, and brawls erupt over cutting military spending. Mr. Gates has given Mr. Obama credibility on national security, which was why he was asked to stay at the Pentagon after the 2008 election.

But there were other reasons. While Democrats knew they lacked public trust on national security, they couldn't scrape up a plausible Democrat for the job. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, a former career military man, was a candidate but reportedly declined the honor. The White House would find itself in the same pickle after Mr. Gates's departure, with no Democrat commanding the necessary bipartisan stature.

That is, no one except Hillary Clinton. Politically, no Democrat is better positioned. She has established herself as right of center or near conservative on national security. With Mr. Gates gone, Mr. Obama would need political cover, and Mrs. Clinton has the necessary hard-line standing in the country and in Congress. She'd give him more political protection for tough decisions on Afghanistan, for example, than would any other Democrat.

She also has terrific relations with the military brass, including Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and retired generals like the highly respected Army four-star Jack Keane. She knows defense issues from her days on the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Senate would approve her in two days.(continued)

0bama knew full well that having Hillary as VP would mean a very short career for him as President. If he is seriously considering her as VP for 2012, then he’s just asking for trouble.

Hillary Clinton as SecDef? So the National Command Authority would be a man who, if he wasn’t president, couldn’t even get a lowly TS clearance and a women whose links to the Chinese government are well known.

Great.

She can’t even keep from bumbling the Secretary of State job, exactly what credibility would she be bringing with her?

She’s done nothing but back up the idiotic international agenda of one Ayatollah Obama in which the rest of the world has absolutely no use except the Islamofascists.

I've never understood why anyone would consider Hillary a good choice for Pres/VP. She's like Obama, but in a pantsuit with a more irritating voice: she has no accomplishments, no executive experience, and a long-time radical career. Eight years as First Lady qualified her for what, exactly?

She was even promoted as the "smartest woman in the world", which foreshadowed the later glorification of the intellect of The Won, whose grades are sealed. Hillary did not pass the bar exam of DC, which I think the smartest woman in the world should have aced.

I think she has a carefully crafted image meticulously maintained by the media. When you see her have to talk without a script she is a half baked loon. She is not very articulate, unable to keep her stories straight and lies about things that can be easily verified. I don't think she is nearly as clever as people tell her she is.

Remember her telling people she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary even though he didn't become famous until after she was born? Or how about this oldie but goodie:

I'm not going to have some reporters pawing through our papers. We are the president.

There’s no way 0bama would have Hillary as VP, because it would create an obvious comparison that would not be flattering to him. Plus Biden’s not the kind to go quietly.
If 0bama thinks Biden has embarassed his administration so far, just wait until he starts doing it on purpose!

But I really suspect that 0bama is going to find a reelection run untenable, and another challenge from Hillary for the nomination insurmountable. He will duck out like Truman and Johnson. He’ll probably try to save face by saying he’s accomplished everything he wanted to in Washington, then take the money and flee back to Kenya.

This is from the WSJ?

Leslie H. Gelb

Gelb was director of Policy Planning and Arms Control for International Security Affairs at the Department of Defense from 1967 to 1969, winning the Pentagon’s highest award, the Distinguished Service Award. Robert McNamara appointed Gelb as director of the project that produced the controversial Pentagon Papers on the Vietnam War.

He was diplomatic correspondent at The New York Times from 1973 to 1977.

He served as an Assistant Secretary of State in the Carter Administration from 1977 to 1979, serving as director of the Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs and winning the Distinguished Honor Award, the highest award of the US State Department.

He returned to the Times in 1981; from then until 1993, he was in turn its national security correspondent, deputy editorial page editor, editor of the Op-Ed Page, and columnist. This period included his leading role on the Times team that won a Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Journalism in 1986 for a six-part comprehensive series on the “Star Wars” Strategic Defense Initiative).

Gelb became President of the Council on Foreign Relations in 1993 and as of 2005[update] is its President Emeritus.

He serves as the chairman of the advisory board for the progressive foreign policy think tank, National Security Network, on the board of directors of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, member of the board of directors of the Truman scholars program, board of directors of the Nixon Center and the advisory board of United Against Nuclear Iran.

Gelb is a contributor to The Daily Beast, a news aggregation site.

She can read the leaves on the current mood of the country and on O up close. She can tell other dems just what a dope he is.

No need to be his VP when she can go for it all in 2012. No need to share with O cause O is done in 2012. She knows it and her polling services have told her the same thing.

But will there still be a U.S. to govern in 2012?

Oh and she is no sweet pea either. Look back over some of the Clinton posts on FR from Bill's regime. Also look over the Clinton death list.
