Central Park is not just an oasis its New York Citys sanctuary, the soul of Manhattan.
Which also makes it a battleground, a 1.32 square mile symbol of how were doing. Police fight to maintain the perception that the park and, by extension, the city that surrounds it is safe.
That image has taken a blow in recent weeks after a handful of headline-making attacks, including the sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman last Sunday just inside the park near Fifth Avenue and 85th Street, and the rape of an 18-year-old in April near the East 79th Street Transverse, which sparked memories of the infamous Central Park jogger case that happened exactly 11 years earlier.
Serious crime in the park is up 52% with 35 felonies this year through June 6, up from 23 in 2009 and up 34% since 2008, NYPD stats show.
There were three armed robberies between March 10 and April 3. Another, on Jan. 3, involved the mugging of a love-struck couple from New Jersey, who lost their $32,000 engagement ring to a gun-toting thief beneath the Trefoil Arch near East 73rd Street at 8:20 p.m.
Cops are looking to bust a band of sticky fingered teens who spend their after-school hours on the prowl, snatching unattended bags off park benches between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Victims are often nannies or mothers with their kids.

YUp. No Rudy no peace and with Obama it is even worse.
Time to reactivate the “assassination squad”. From what I recall, in the late 60’s and early 70’s, the police had established what they called “stake out squads” which were basically two man surveillance teams armed with 12 gauge shot guns inside liquor stores which were easy prey on friday nights. Perps would come in, announce a stick up, armed, and be greated by a few blasts...end of story no recidavism.
They just need to employ that technique in other high crime areas now. It worked and was only disbanded after one of the perps lived and testified his only recollection of being urged to surrender was the detective announcing, just before he shot him: “April Fool MF”
Ain’t it amazin’ how “progressives” and crime are synergistic?
Is it just a coincidence that crime in Central Park went up after the MADOFF PONZI scheme was revealed?
There be a whole lot of broke folks in NY, know what I mean?
I think your remembering what they used to call the “Felony Squad”. 4 officers armed with pistols and two of the 4 were armed with a shotgun and an M1 Carbine. But I am not sure on this.
They’ve been subsidizing barbarians for decades, now rhey’re surprised they have a surplus?
Bloomers is so proud of the new murder stats. Not so many guns.
The man is deranged.
He still hasn’t figured it out. More guns, less crime.
people should arm them selves and learn how to defend themselves.
No Democrat has ever met a felon he did not love.
I’ve been traveling to NYC on business every few weeks for about 30 years. During the Dinkins era it was a liberal cesspool — filthy, broken infrastructure, rude people, aggressive homeless panhandlers everywhere, and sirens wailing all night long. During Rudy’s tenure as mayor the city cleaned up. It was safe to walk alone at night in most areas of Manhattan. People seemed comfortable and happy on the streets as the vermin had been removed from constantly bothering citizens on the street.
Every time I visit the city I see more signs of decay. The infrastructure is declining and the panhandlers are back in force. Grafitti is much more prevalent. Cabs are becoming dirty and the Middle Eastern cab drivers are surly at best. People on the street after dusk seem much more wary and I see fewer people walking in even the “safe” areas alone. There is a feeling that it is slipping back into the cesspool where the lowest elements of society run free, leaving the majority of law abiding citizens living in fear.
Bloomberg is another wealthy elitist who seems content to preside over the decline of Western Civilization while he lives in isolated splendor postulating about how the rest of us should serve the state.
Who wants an M1 carbine? No stopping power.
Is it time to consider auctioning off Central Park to developers, who can build skyscrapers there, and thus, push out crime?
More stopping power than the .38 specials there were issued back in the day.
NYC desperately needs shall issue CCW. It would clean out that town in 3 weeks.
Never heard of that before. Probably why I love watching Death Wish.
I was there three years ago and a youth of color faked a punch to my face on Broadway to impress his friends. I had a one year old infant on my back. If had a gun I would have unloaded every bullet.
Bloomburg - Dinkins. Both shmucks.
