Maybe the Sunderlands can team up with the family who claimed their young sun was in the runaway balloon over Colorado.

Maybe it REALLY was? Maybe we were set up and they never intended for her to complete the voyage? Maybe it ended the way they planned?

Forgot to mention another shocker - the girl is writing a book. And the family wants donations to get the boat back.

Oh I have no doubt she was trying to make it....but this wasnt simply a girl looking to make her own mark in the world...it’s a whole family seeking fame and fortune...I guess they thought it was worth the *cough* “risk”

Thanks for the thread..first time I heard of it. I’m not surprised though!

Article regarding brother Zac from last July..

“I don’t know if he’s set to be on the Wheaties box yet,” his mother, Marianne Sunderland, said Friday in acknowledging that the family has an agent looking to sign her son to commercials and endorsements.”

Betcha it's not reported there are many teens who have asked their parents if they could sail around the world solo...And their loving parents said "no"..

And I'm tired of hearing our teenagers put down because they aren't out there doing something 'life threatening'...good grief.

From another thread: “Mrs Sunderland, who is pregnant with the family’s eighth child...”

Maybe Mr. Sutherland ought to go on a solo sail around the world and give the Mrs. a rest.

You're welcome, I have to give credit to the source from which I grabbed "just the facts". I didn't link it quite right so it didn't appear in my first post. I just stumbled on the guy and his article, the facts he relays are pretty obvious.

Let’s not diminish her skills or achievement, however. She was the youngest to round the Cape of Good Hope solo and got halfway around the world. Very impressive.

But the outcome was almost inevitable due to the timing (not only the winter aspect but the fact she only owned the boat for three months before her departure and two of those months were spent tricking it out with sponsorship logos and retrofitting the gear) and the parental pimping unforgivable.

They deserve as much attention as Octomom has garnered. Pretty much none. Let each of their other six kids try to beat each other to be the youngest. This bunch is about as loathsome as it comes.

Besides, the book has already been written. Lionheart, the Jesse Martin story.

These parents are lower than whale poop. I wish the authority that recognizes records in sailing would make the boat put up bond for any cost related to rescue or admin expense for a country. Plus require 18 years old as the entry level.

I am so frosted about this. Sending your kid to her potential death is child abuse in the first degree. The kid failed, was behind schedule, put in for repairs and was then advised by her father to continue the march. Put those parents in a Dingy in the middle of the Southern Ocean in Winter. Let's see what hero's they are. That girl was facing weather worse that what crashed her for the next two months.

Honor the rescuers. The fishing boat crew that got her lost production, and the captain, almost his life. Fell into the water. I'm hot about this.

"Dad," I said, "I want to go to the moon."

... This is the third line of Chapter 1 of a book which I'm sure is familiar to many.

I’m amazed at the number of people that think we need to have children risk their lives to support their parents. It not the 1600’s, the 1500’s the 1700’s, are the 1800’s. We don’t have children doing slave labor anymore, third world countries do.

She didn't. She failed and good people bailed her butt out. She didn't defeat anything.

Read some of the worlds finest sailors at this site. Many rail against the hair-brained scheme.

I seriously irked some Abby supporters. The whole idea that if you don’t worship this young fool and her parents for what she did, then you aren’t really a conservative — that REALLY got under my skin!

When it’s an anonymous forum it’s real easy to rant and rave about how the country depends on kids like this running to their doom for reality TV. And that’s no joke either, they have been and still are.
