Here's a dose of reality.
The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

Its Octomom on the high seas
And when they turn 16, when they can’t vote, drink, join the military, sing contracts, lease a car (too immature for making those decisions), let them sail solo around the world.
Yup. reasonable to me.
In the olden days, we would just sit out on our front porch and watch our dumb @ss neighbors.
LOL. It’s a plan.
Get a grip - we’re turning into a nation of pussies, seriously.
We would rather families sit safely in front of the TV being brainwshed by the likes of Geraldo that these people are the evil ones.
I say good for them - our nation was built by folks with similiar spirit. My own grandfather left home at twelve, shipping out as a cabin boy, generations before that others boarded a ship called the mayflower - most were younger than 25.
The girl was 16 and had all the safety equipment, would I want my daughter to do the same, no, but she doesn’t come across as a victim imho.
Yeah, I remember how Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager, Sally Ride and Neil Armstrong couldn't wait to spread the details of their family lives all over the media in "reality shows".....

Hmmm put my hot daughter in a public high school or on dangerous waters...I’m gonna go with dangerous waters.
“”Did Dad push too hard? Many think wrongful parenting is on display here. Many see nothing wrong in adventurous activities. What do you think?””
You should have been around this weekend. There wasn’t any lack of people’s opinions then. Anyone entering this thread is sure to get blasted all over again but that won’t stop me from giving my opinion one more time.
I think what Abby did was pretty admirable and courageous and I think her parents are raising all their seven children (soon to be eight) in admirable ways and are to be praised/respected for giving them the guidance and environment to challenge, strive, achieve or fail. I understand they have fallen on hard times and are being picked apart in the media and also here on FR and I think that’s sad.
Neither Abby or her brother were without experience or spirit when they set out to achieve a goal and a dream.
It may have been the yacht that broke him. When I saw that dis-masted exotic 40’ hull bobbing in the ocean I thought I saw the silver lining to this story: the manipulative SOB lost his investment on the other side of the world.
The gold lining is that the kid is alive and well and has every hope of growing up to be a better person than her old man.
I remember when they decided aiming high and living life was too risky so they instead put on a helmet and sat at the kitchen table reading. Oh wait, they didn’t.
Never mind the fact that it cost the Australian taxpayers $300,000 to find this young lady on the high seas....
If someone chooses to attempt these daredevil adventures, IMO they should be prepared and required to self-fund their own “rescues” when things go badly
So would the Sunderlands actually. It would all be for nothing if no one watched their reality show Adventures in Sunderland!
Why wait? Just sign up on FACEBOOK or TWITTER.
You betcha. If they pay for it. Unfortunately ...

Is this an expose from Whorealdo?
Right. Let your kid sail around the world, or chain them to the tv. Those are our only choices.
Encouraging your kids to do something risky because they really want to do it themselves, but also making sure they take reasonable safety precautions = great parenting
Encouraging your kids to do something risky so you can parlay it into a TV contract = great douchebaggery
But are they going to teach their kids that it’s wrong to make others pay for your misadventures?
I think the Sunderlands have more of a sense of entitlement than they do a yearning for adventure:

“Broke guy aims to become reality TV star.”
That’s the American spirit!
Yeah. Fame and self aggrandizement.
Admirable as hell, that.
