Broke Dad Put Abby Up for Sail
Fox News ^ | June 14, 2010

Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

>> Maybe we can just check each other’s security cameras all day long.

That’s not such a bad idea, actually. Let me know before it goes live; I need to shave and put on a clean tee shirt.

This stunt was TOTALLY nuts. Now the truth come out. The family is broke and needs attention and wants a reality show.

I know what I’m talking about here. My father was a professional yacht salesman. I was practically raised on boats myself. My parents owned boats for many years and only recently sold their boat.

They sailed on the Great Lakes frequently where the conditions can change on a dime and become quite dangerous. My father has extensive experience sailing in both the ocean and the Great Lakes and would never try something so foolish.

The waters the young girl was sailing in were VASTLY more dangerous. The cape around the Horn of Africa is EXTREMELY treacherous and also home to one of the largest concentrations of Great White sharks in the world. Much larger vessels have capsized in these dangeous waters.

Why was it necessary for the sixteen year old girl to be ALL BY HERSELF on such a dangerous voyage? What parent in their right mind could sleep at night with their young daughter in such danger?

The parents should be put in jail and charged with child endangement.

Hogwash. Not all sixteen year old people are stupid and incapable.

I’m scared of spiders. I can’t imagine being in the Indian Ocean with 30 foot waves crashing on me. The fact that she attempted this trip and withstood those conditions tells me she was ready, willing, and able. You know who is stupider than her? The three young adults who accidentally wondered into Iran while hiking in Iraq. That was stupid and reckless. And the two blogettes who wondered into North Korea while travelling in South Korea. They were pretty reckless too. We had to send an ex president over there to grovel for their release. That was worse than this young adventurer choosing to risk her life for something she believed in. Now if she had sailed in a flotilla towards Israel, I would call her stupid.

Who said he encouraged it because of a TV contract, you’re inferring his motives, he signed the contract AFTER she left, why not try to monetize her journey? Had she made it she’s be marketable as an inspiration everywhere, able to have her pick of colleges. Too many nanny staters on FR who want children to only sit by the fireside and read the bible. Get real. This guy’s daughter is a blessing, most kids get only have aspirations to spend their days playing world of warcraft and “sexting.”

>> where are all the hypercritical FR posters that bashed many of us (and opined that we were somehow ?destroying freedom, etc) for daring to question the rationale and motives of this young girl and her family

Haven’t heard a peep out of ‘em. I think they got de-masted in the rough waters of reality.

Some of you, with all due respect, sound like the idiots here in Boston.

It’s ok if there’s no money involved, but bad if the family made money off the deal.

This really is silly crap - most of the libs like Geraldo that find this so outrageous would gladly give condoms to kids, allow 12 year olds to get an abortion without parental consent.

Does anyone really think this girl was cast adrift to fend for herself without prior experience? We have developed into a nation of 30 & 40 year olds that find video games as being daring. Sad.

I think they should make a reality show starring Octomom, Balloon Boy’s family, and Sailboat Girl. Octo’s toddlers would look cute in little sailor outfits crewing the boat, and Balloon Boy Dad could strap a shark fin to his back and swim around it for added drama. Maybe Jerry Springer could be involved somehow.

Sample episode: The gang are sailing off the coast of Tasmania. Octo’s pregnant again (quads this time), and goes into labor on the boat. Captain Abby tries to get her to the mainland, but Balloon Boy snaps the rudder and a storm is brewing. Cameo by Levi Johnston as Octo’s baby daddy.

Episode 2: Unable to get to land, Captain Abby has to deliver the babies herself. She gets talked through the procedure by a Tasmanian doctor via radio, but crashing waves knock out the radio after the second birth and she has to handle the last two on her own. While she’s distracted, Balloon Boy misplaces one of the newborns, and everybody pitches in and hunts for it. Balloon Boy Dad finally repairs the boat with duct tape, and they make it to shore. Octomom meets Kevin Federline at the hospital and is pregnant again by the end of the episode.

It’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ meets ‘LOST’ meets ‘Cheaper By The Dozen.’

All seven children are home-schooled.

Oooooh.

Can you believe it! This girl is sailing solo on open ocean waters and she probably doesn't even know how to put a condom on a cucumber.

First it was the balloon boy.

Now it’s the buffoon girl...or is it the baboon girl?

Broke? Don’t they have seven kids with another on the way? How about showing some common d*mned sense?

Having kids is not as expensive as outfitting them with hightech sailboats with all the bells and whistles and sending them to sail around the world. I am sure you can raise more than one kid and send them to college for the cost of that boat she left in the Indian Ocean.

If someone chooses to attempt these daredevil adventures, IMO they should be prepared and required to self-fund their own “rescues” when things go badly

A valid point.

Now, how many other people (male or female/adult or non-adult) who attempted a risky adventure, were required to self-fund their own rescue?

Since this happened in Australia (the 'cost'), what business is it of ours?

“... most of the libs like Geraldo that find this so outrageous would gladly give condoms to kids, allow 12 year olds to get an abortion without parental consent.”

You’re exactly right. Geraldo, as a matter of fact, while criticizing her family, threw in that ... (are you ready?) they are HOMESCHOOLERS! Geraldo considers homeschooling child neglect.

I guess it wasn’t child neglect when he was a serial adulterer hopping from one bed to another leaving a trail of offspring along the way. He’s just the model parent, isn’t he?
