Did Dad push too hard? Many think wrongful parenting is on display here. Many see nothing wrong in adventurous activities. What do you think?

I think “Media Whore FailBoat” would be a better title.

Television is getting to be like a small town parade. Half the people stand on the sidewalk and the other half walk by.
Eventually we’ll all have reality TV shows. Maybe we can just check each other’s security cameras all day long.

The parents should be put in jail and charged with child endangement.

A sixteen year old girl all by herself in boat going around the world.

At least with the boy in the balloon... he wasn’t actually in the balloon.

How many yachts do they have?

A lot of us would love to be that broke.

Word was that the 30 ft seas in that part of the ocean was predictable so methinks there may be some culpability.

These kids have sailing in their blood...These young folks turn into Jacques Cousteaus or teachers of the same. Let them enjoy their love.

Imagine the love for her brother to follow in his footsteps. Remeinds me of my grandchildren and the bond they share in sports.

BROKE??

When is the old man signing the family up for welfare?

They are going to need some food stamps & somebody to pay the hospital bill for the baby that's on the way.

If this goes well - they may decide that this is a better scam than the reality show!!!

Or maybe this leech might decide to actually get a job & go to work instead of pimping his kids.

The Australian who designed the boat stated the girl was not strong enough to operate the boat and the American Sailing Association refused to sponsor her because they felt it was too risky since her route placed her in the treacherous Indian Ocean during the notoriously tough winter months.

“The wheels in motion for this trip had actually started when Abigail was 13 years old,” he added.

Because 13 year olds should make decisions like this.

Search FR for "abbysutherland" back on Friday and Saturday and see all the posts by Freepers on how heroic Abby and her dad were and how those who took issue with her needing a costly (no pun intended) bailout by the Oz navy were nanny staters and worse.

NOW the truth comes out.

It's exactly like balloon boy, when all the media (sadly including Fox News) and many at FR bought into the !!ZOMG!! hysteria, while only a few of us openly suggested a scam.

First it was the balloon boy.

Now it’s the buffoon girl...is it the baboon girl?

“”Did Dad push too hard? Many think wrongful parenting is on display here. Many see nothing wrong in adventurous activities. What do you think?””

You should have been around this weekend. There wasn’t any lack of people’s opinions then. Anyone entering this thread is sure to get blasted all over again but that won’t stop me from giving my opinion one more time.

I think what Abby did was pretty admirable and courageous and I think her parents are raising all their seven children (soon to be eight) in admirable ways and are to be praised/respected for giving them the guidance and environment to challenge, strive, achieve or fail. I understand they have fallen on hard times and are being picked apart in the media and also here on FR and I think that’s sad.

Neither Abby or her brother were without experience or spirit when they set out to achieve a goal and a dream.

OK so were are all the hypercritical FR posters that bashed many of us (and opined that we were somehow ?destroying freedom, etc) for daring to question the rationale and motives of this young girl and her family

Never mind the fact that it cost the Australian taxpayers $300,000 to find this young lady on the high seas....

If someone chooses to attempt these daredevil adventures, IMO they should be prepared and required to self-fund their own “rescues” when things go badly
