I was at a campout this weekend with a boys organization; The Royal Rangers. I noticed a huge difference between our boys locally, and the boys from the other large city that joined us. The boys from the larger city were: Fat (mostly), whiners, didn’t know how to do basic tasks, displaying ADD-like behavior.
1 kid we have in our group recently moved from Denver. 14 and had never camped, tied a knot, pitched a tent, cooked a hot-dog over a fire, shot a rifle. He is also a bit overweight. He’s learning, but man, if this is the future, we are in for a world of hurt.

If you read the entire article, it states that 75% of all youngsters across the country are not elegible for the service. Just what I needed this week..........bad information. Says a lot for our education system. I don’t think it has anything to do with pre-kindergarten education. It has to do with our teachers in all schools. This country did just fine in the past with our youth. Today they can’t even read or write.

Say again? When exactly did GWB allow felons in the military? Without checking, it seems it was the 80's when that was shut down. Except for the Marines (back then), they figured they could still make a contributing member of society out of a felon. I'm pretty sure now, even the Marines turn away felons.

Here is the problem. The thugs and degenerates of our society are allowed to proliferate while the best in our nation are wounded or killed in wars. Perhaps it would be better to take those 90% in Philly and use them for cannon fodder. It would be one of the quickest ways to improve society.

It's been shown repeatedly (and then some) that pre-kindergarten does not change intellectual outcomes. This sounds like a bunch angling for government grants.

That said, the 90% figure may be roughly accurate. I think the military has not been taking anyone below the 30th percentile on the entrance exam for some years now. I imagine that this exclusion, plus felons and physically unfit, could keep out a lot of people.

2. Tatoos
3. Overweight
4. Drugs (pee test)
5. Basic knowledge exam (general knowledge for an 8th grader)

I’m wondering if the weight issue could be addressed with a modified or additional basic training program. An 18 year old can slim down and beef up fairly quickly (compared to us old farts, anyway). I’d think a program of 4-6 weeks of PT and monitored diet prior to basic/boot would bring a lot of those recruits up to standard.

Of course, I’m assuming the military’s recruiting needs would be such that the extra time, cost, and effort were worth it. If a service branch can get what they need from the 25% that do pass muster, then so be it.

And another tidbit from CNN: It wasn't always like this. In the past, when the economy was strong, the military struggled to fill its ranks. But since fiscal year 2006, the DOD has consistently met or exceeded its recruitment goals. This occurred even as the Navy, Marines and Air Force raised the bar on their goals.

Yes...the drug/felony waivers helped, though they weren't a lot. It was mainly the Army problem, and the DoD had to play some numbers games (adjust target to meet recruitment, boost bonuses, restrict mustering out, etc.).
