WASHINGTON (AFP) President Barack Obama on Monday named five of America's top scientists, environmentalists and conservation experts to his independent commission set up to probe the causes of the Gulf oil spill.
The five, mostly drawn from some of the nation's leading academic centers, will join the bipartisan body set up last month in the wake of an explosion that ripped through a BP-leased rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
"These individuals bring tremendous expertise and experience to the critical work of this commission," Obama said in a statement released as he toured stricken southern states on a two-day trip to the Gulf region.
"I am grateful they have agreed to serve as we work to determine the causes of this catastrophe and implement the safety and environmental protections we need to prevent a similar disaster from happening again."
...
The seven-member body is chaired by two-term Florida governor and former senator Bob Graham, a Democrat, and former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency William Reilly, a Republican.
Its main task is to provide recommendations on how the oil industry can prevent -- and mitigate the impact of -- any future spills that result from offshore drilling.
Obama has slapped a six-month moratorium on deepsea drilling in the Gulf, pending the results of the probe into what caused the Deepwater Horizon rig to blow out on April 20, and sink two days later.
Among those tapped to join the commission are Cherry Murray, who was appointed the dean of the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and professor of engineering and applied sciences in July 2009.
...
She will join two other women, among them Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a non-profit corporation working to push US and global environmental policy.

and NRDC??
Drill, baby drill and suck that reservoir dry ASAP.
Meanwhile, Obummer books another tee time and looks for some celebs to help him party down while ignoring international offers for assistance.
Gee..weren’t the global warming scientists available?
Experts have been falling all over his ass to help for the past 60 days...who’s he waiting for, some “out of work” global warming scientists?
Let me guess, the conclusion of the probe will involve some kind of massive tax on oil, natural gas, and coal (to save the children, or the Gulf of Mexico, or Michelle’s lettuce, or...).
***Its main task is to provide recommendations on how the oil industry can prevent — and mitigate the impact of — any future spills that result from offshore drilling.***
Shouldn’t they be tasked with trying to stop THIS oil spill?
Do any of them, or have any of them worked in the offshore oil industry?
If not, these ARE NOT experts. These are Leftist plants, positioned to take their pound of flesh out of not only BP, but the industry.
Obama’s commission is a bull ssss commission. It’s a farce, stacked with the people that hate the oil industry the most.
What even handed decisions will be made here? None...

Let these guys handle it
As with any academic, when faced with a problem, they call MORE academics...
PS: I’m so sick of looking at John McCain every time I click on a thread......
Yeah! Top US scientists headed by the world renowned scientist Bob Graham.
For this ‘international man’, ‘Man of the World’ our President ... he’s turning down a lot of help. Some of it might just be a bit more knowledgeable that the US minds assembled.
I’m surprised he hasn’t called in Batman.

What the heck does she know about the art of oil well drilling?
Academia is probably not the place to look for immediate practical solutions to a very difficult problem.
Obama doesn't care ~ just so long as he looks good.
And what expertise are they bringing to the table?
I bet they’d be a better president than what we have now!
My thoughts exactly...we can do the postmortem later....geez....and he was elected to make good decisions...
FIX THE F-ING PROBLEM
NOT the BLAME Idiot
"I'm thinking about it."
A blue ribbon panel? That’s some pretty heady stuff. Obama’s pulling out all the stops on this oil spill now, using every tool at his disposal.
So, never fear, Fearless Leader has power in reserve. Between this illustrious bipartisan panel, the Sternly Worded Letter reaching consensus as we speak and the UN Resolution on carbon credits yet to come, we shall always be maximally Safe, Secure and Healthy.
All praises to you Fearless Leader, O benevolent Obama.
If these people are like him and his Czars we have problems.

Obama taps top scientific minds for oil spill probe
Yup, another global warming ring of idiots.
Scientists, My Aunt Gertrude: What we need are drilling experts. People who work on these things, people who have stopped spills in other places on other wells.
These people come from the oil companies, not some liberal scientist who teaches BS and doesnt know his head from his butt.
It is like hiring a baker to put a new roof on your house.
But this illustrious panel looks like America. It’s an objective good.

I am not (favorably) impressed.
When it comes to opil spills this panel is like the pResident. They dont know Chit from Chinola.
Main job...covering Federal behind....and making sure the right people go down at BP....
“What the heck does she know about the art of oil well drilling?”
Maybe she’s an expert on menopause?
Barry has become very predictable. No matter what the issue, he can be counted on to set up a blue ribbon panel headed by a person from Harvard. They will spend countless amounts of money and months debating and parsing minutia before publishing a ten pound report. All that’s required is a cap on the well, not another panel.
Just from following these threads, to me, it looks like they failed to follow generally accepted engineering practice guidelines involving the amount of cement in the riser plugs, casing strength, number of well spacers, etc. Experienced people spoke up and were overruled due to time and financial considerations. I don’t know if these are matters of written standards, “rule of thumb” calculations, or legally binding regulations. Recommendation: Follow the standards and guidelines, and listen to experienced people.
