REPORT: IRANIAN RED CRESCENT TO SEND TWO SHIPS TO GAZA

The Iranian Red Crescent is planning to send two ships to Gaza this week it was announced on Monday.

AFP quotes Red Crescent director for international affairs Abdolrauf Adibzadeh as saying: “One ship will carry donations made by the people and the other will carry relief workers. The ships will be sent to Gaza by end of this week.”

Iran Revolutionary Guards ready to escort Gaza ships 06 Jun 2010 12:40:35 GMT Source: Reuters TEHRAN, June 6 (Reuters) - Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards are ready to provide a military escort to cargo ships trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, a representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday.

“Iran’s navy forces are ready to escort the peace flotilla to Gaza with all their powers and capabilities,” Ali Shirazi, Khamenei’s representative inside the Revolutionary Guards, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Mehr news agency.

Any intervention by the Iranian military would be considered highly provocative by Israel which accuses Iran of supplying weapons to Hamas, the Islamist movement which rules Gaza.

The Guards, with their own navy, air force and command structure separate from the regular armed forces, are seen as fiercely loyal to the values of the Islamic Republic.

“If the Supreme Leader issues an order for this then the Revolutionary Guard naval forces will do their best to secure the ships,” Shirazi said. “It is Iran’s duty to defend the innocent people of Gaza.”

I would expect the first ships trying to breach the blockade will be very clean, nothing but toys and baby milk. Then they will make a huge deal, with the help of the Left and the MSM, of how innocent their intentions are. But wait a short while and they will be trying to slip weapons into the mix. The Palestinians will use this as a plank in their ongoing PR campaign against Israel. Most people capable of even the most rudimentary logical thinking realize Israel is under attack from every side. And it's a war of attrition. It's the body-blows a boxer uses to soften up the opponent. Body-blow after body-blow and then, when the time is right, a blow to the head.

Maybe so, but it there are also armed Iranian Marines on board, that makes it arguably a troop transport vessel, carrying troops from a hostile coutry.

The downside is that for Israel the navy is the weakest link in their military shield. Admittedly the IAF backs their action so the small size if Israel's navy isn't as big a problem as if fist appears. But the Turks have a decent navy. This has the potential of a peeing match between Iran and Turkey to see who will run the Muslim world. And Israel is in the unenviable position of punching bag.
