Guns and Free Speech (The NRA sells out to the Dems and aids their re-election)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | June 16, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 06/15/2010 6:43:01 PM PDT by St. Louis Conservative

The National Rifle Association is suffering a sudden onset of amnesia this week, as the gun lobby cuts a deal to exempt itself from the latest Congressional attempt to repeal the First Amendment. NRA members may soon regret the organization's bid to ingratiate itself with Democrats at the expense of its longtime free-speech allies.

The campaign finance bill, sponsored by Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Chris Van Hollen, is the Democratic response to the Supreme Court's January decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which restored the First Amendment right of corporations, unions and nonprofits to make independent campaign expenditures. At the time, the NRA's Wayne LaPierre called Citizens United "a defeat for arrogant elitists who wanted to carve out free speech as a privilege for themselves and deny it to the rest of us."

Look who's arrogant and elitist now. Under the Schumer-Van Hollen bill, political speech would be bound up with new restrictions, including special burdens on government contractors and corporations that have a certain level of foreign ownership or received TARP funds. The bill also includes disclosure rules designed to hit corporations, requiring CEOs to appear to "approve this message" the way politicians do, and for groups to identify their donors. Except for the NRA.

Under the NRA carve-out in the House bill, the new rules won't apply to any organizations that have been around for more than 10 years, have more than a million members and receive less than 15% of their funding from corporate donors. That fits the NRA nicely, though as best we can figure, everyone else, from the Sierra Club to Planned Parenthood, fails to qualify. So much for defending the little guy against the fat cats.

so I suppose the nra allowing the muslim terrorist front group CAIR’s agenda setter, lobbist, fund raiser and head heavy hitter, grover norquist, to ALSO serve as an nra board member for years, (with their FULL knowledge of his anti American activities), is just fine with you huh?

AS a matter of fact donmeaker I don’t. Everywhere I wear a NRA hand I’m greeted with distain or accolades. I’ve had many discussions with people that are pro-gun 2nd Amendment.

I think this whole thing is BS from people and groups jealous of the clout the NRA has and wants it. Sorry spell check not working tonite.

Does this mean I have to give my NRA pocket knife back?

No. You can keep it as a reminder who the NRA stabbed their fellow Americans in the back.

Really, they are against Feinstein and Boxer in CA. and that’s all I need right now.

Great. Meanwhile They will push the Disclose Act down our throats to eliminate our first Amendment rights to stifle any dissent and take away your guns via the U.N. That's very comforting. The NRA's selfish and shortsighted strategy will earn them zip. You've been scammed by socialists/marxists.

Why do you think the socialists agreed to the NRA stipulation? The answer is they have no intention of honoring their word anymore more than BO/BS honors his word! They are using the U/N to do an end run around the Constitution and your organization unwittingly just helped them move one step closer to their marxist agenda! How naive can you people be? I won't lose. All Americans will lose because of the ignorance and greed of you people!

I regret that the NRA felt more concern about other pro-gun organizations than they did about the right of those other organizations to have free speech.

And so they sold out. What a pity. A great force for good has given itself a “Glock racing stripe”.

I guess you don’t have a subscription to America’s 1st Freedom. And don’t call me ignorant & don’t call me greedy even though I am a capitalist.

We argued against the bitch that represented the UN in this debate showcasing our opposition. There’s even a video, check it out.

The NRA is selling out first amendment rights just because they have been exempted this time. A long fought Supreme Court ruling to get rid of infringement of their freedom of speech as well as everyone elses.

LaPierre is bugging the hell out of me lately, he goes out on Tea Party Rally Day in Searchlight, Nevada to meet with Harry Body Odor Reid. Reid may not be as anti-gun as other Dems but he did nothing to pass Thune’s bill last year.

okay sure! the/your ‘dude’ thing gave you away tho. anyone over 35 years old does not use ‘dude’. that is how children talk. so go ahead anyway tho, once again, one more time, do your homework on the once great nra, look up grover/CAIR/nra. start, (many other articles on this scandal tho), with debbie schlussel’s 8/7/2008 article. “nra had a spy in gun control group...muslims have a spy in the nra”. you might learn something...

One more time...

The "R" in NRA stands for "Rifle", not "Republican".

As an NRA member, I want the organization to look out for my best interests; not the GOP's. And if memory serves, the last time we got campaign finance reform, it was pushed by a Republican senator and signed into law by a Republican president. Now those same Republicans want the NRA to sell out its members so that the GOP can raise more campaign money.

I don't think so.
