There are glimmers of hope for Democrats battling to retain control of Congress in this fall's elections, with the party holding a slender edge in public trust for shepherding the economy and small gains in those saying their finances are healthy, according to a new poll.
The reeling economy remains the American public's top concern, according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll conducted earlier this month, making public attitudes about it crucial for both parties' hopes in November.
The good news for Democrats: By a slim margin (47% to 42%), people trust them more than Republicans to guide the economy. And slightly more — now 64% — say their household budgets are in good shape.
In addition, people want Democrats to win control of Congress, by a 46% to 39% margin. That is the second straight month in which Democrats have held a delicate advantage on that question since April, when 44% preferred Republicans and 41% picked Democrats.
“When Clinton was in office, we were doing exceptionally well. Then Republicans got in office and we are where we are,” said Daniel Lowery, 23, a warehouse worker from Fostoria, Ohio, who wants Democrats to continue leading the House and Senate.
Even so, there's plenty in the poll to encourage Republicans, and nothing that contradicts many analysts' views that the current opposition party has a solid shot of capturing majorities of one or both chambers of Congress.
The public's anti-Washington mood remains robust, with 55% saying they want a new member of Congress — bad news for Democrats with more incumbents to defend. A low 24% approve of how Congress is doing its job, a hefty 72% still say the nation's economy is in poor condition, and 77% consider huge federal budget deficits a top concern.

A 7 point lead means there wont be much if any change in Congress and President EpicFail can continue along his merry way... I don't think so. This is one of the most blatant push polls Ive seen in recent years.

It doesn’t matter. We have to get close to 50 seats to regain power and that is going to be a challenge....can be done but with gerrymandering on both sides so intense, it will be a great day if this occurs, but it won’t be easy.
Hey dumbshit, when Clinton took office, you were SIX. When he left office, you were 14. What the hell do you know?
That’s all fine and dandy but people don’t vote on control of Congress, they vote on their own members. And poll after poll show nearly every single House seat gained in 2006 as vulnerable and competitive this year, and a whole bunch more on top of that.
I was 18 when Clinton left office. I always say he made a conservative out of me.

FWIW I do remember Reagan and was younger under Reagan than this guy was under Klintoon, however, I actually PAID ATTENTION.
Financially they were pretty good years if I say so myself. If you remember, they were for you too.
I am only old enough to remember the tail end of Reagan’s time. But I know my history too. This dim bulb obviously doesn’t.
This is the same newspaper that had Gray Davis winning against Arnold by 20 points the morning of the election. Lost by twenty.
