L.A. City Council to consider first exception to Arizona boycott
L.A. Times Blog ^ | June 15, 2010 | David Zahniser

One month after it voted to impose a partial economic boycott of Arizona over its immigration policies, the Los Angeles City Council is poised to grant its first exception to its ban on city-related travel to that state.

Council members will be asked at Tuesday's meeting to make an exception to the boycott for four Los Angeles Police Department officers who are scheduled to attend the Airborne Law Enforcement Assn. Conference in Tucson from July 12 to July 17.

The exception was requested by Councilman Greig Smith, who cast the council's lone vote against the boycott. In his request, which was also signed by Councilman Bernard C. Parks, Smith said this year's conference will be hosted by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Councilman Richard Alarcon, a supporter of the boycott, voiced doubts about Smith's request, saying he wants to make sure that the training is essential to public safety -- and cannot be obtained by the LAPD elsewhere. "If we are going to carve out certain exceptions, we better set a high standard," he said.

Now is the time for Arizona to boycott LA. Turn off the water and electricity unless LA pays the 10,000% increase coming into place on their bills.

Perfect. LA City Council first establishes a ridiculous standard having nothing to do with their jurisdiction. Now, they waste time considering an exception.

Nothing like the liberals "FIERCE MORAL URGENCY OF CHANGE"

Except when it gets in our way. After all, rules and regs are for the little people.

AZ should bar them from the conference.

Live by the boycott, DIE by the boycott. Oh, and good luck funding all of the illegals heading to bankrupt LA. The council members should be turning in their coin jars and sprucing up those spare bedrooms.

With all of the troubles in LA, it is now ironic that the training of their peace officers would suffer because of their boycott.

And all because Arizona wants to enforce the law. What an upside-down world we live in.

Brewer has the balls to do it, so does Arapaio...make LA pay through the arse for energy and see how much they push back against law-abiding citizens.

Screw LA.

They should refuse the request and then with that precedent cease operations of the air cops in total.

Boycott LA!! Send all the illegals in AZ to LA. Let them live with their dumbass decision.

And you’re correct ‘dita. Alarcon’s not one to talk about standards of any kind.

All good Cali. businessmen and investors just need to quit California by closing or abandoning shop and starting over in a saner world - let CA fall into anarchy and become the abysmal sewer liberals apparently want to be. I would greatly enjoy watching this.

Agreed 10,000%! I also think the individuals in question should be disinvited from this event in AZ. If L.A. wants a boycott, then by all means give it to them.

Boycotts can be a two way street. Just let LA know that its purely a business decision.

No electricity, now water in LA. Think tourism would go down.

Besides California knows all about budget problems, Arizona has them too and needs to adjust expenses accordingly.

Alarcon is the one, according to Kevin James, who has kept a proxy residence in his district for several years, has never lived there.
