Anchorage, Alaska - Alaska wildlife officials say they will object to key aspects of federal plans to provide additional protection for polar bears.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will collect testimony in Anchorage Tuesday evening on its proposal to designate critical habitat for the bears, listed two years ago as a threatened species.

The agency has proposed designating 187,166 square miles of U.S. territory as polar bear critical habitat, which means it contains features essential for the conservation of a species and may require special management.

Kempthorne let the enviro nazis get their foot in the door with his ruling and now the enviros will try to make the most of it. Polar bears are neither threatened or endangered.

Is this on the some 70% of fed lands in AK or is this on state land?

THere is no doubt polar bears can thrive on human flesh. Environazis interested in having a lot of thriving polar bears about can sacrifice themselves to their new god in a quite personal way.

What a steaming crock of crap. I yearn for the day that the feds, BLM and Park Service thugs up here start kicking rocks south-bound down the Alcan.

Polar bears are ‘endangered’ politically, and that’s it.

My bet is you’d be right. When Kempthorne made the ruling it was evident the enviros were trying to stop drilling.

I haven't been able to find out yet though it doesn't matter much as to the stopping of drilling.

Do you know anything about the locations, Yank?

What this means is that thousands of acres will be useless for any other purpose except as breeding grounds for Polar beers that are doing just fine now.

The agency has proposed designating 187,166 square miles of U.S. territory as polar bear critical habitat, which means it contains features essential for the conservation of a species and may require special management.

Alaska is roughly 600,000 sq mi, and this is about 1/3 of the entire state. Another massive land grab and nothing more.

The north slope- the Arctic tundra north of the Brooks Range to the Arctic Ocean is roughly 90,000 sq mi. The area occupied by 'big oil' (roads, pads, pipelines) is ~315 sq mi, excluding the AK pipeline.

Polar bears don't occupy an area nearly that vast, as they are mainly near the coast. Occasionally they go inland a ways, but not too far. Only one that I know of was ever seen (and shot) near Ft. Yukon.

See my post #12 for more info on that. I don’t know exactly, but since polar bears are only in the northern part of the state it would be the upper 1/3 portion.

This will have a big impact on oil exploration, as most of the polar bear issues target oil.

The feds recently halted a big lease that Shell spent over $2 billion on that was offshore somewhere closer to Barrow.

The Feds already control about 2/3rds of the AK land mass. So this must include or cover part of what the already have. Maybe most will come from their 2/3rds.

All this "critical habitat" for polar bears and beluga, and nothing for humans. Typical. I found this on Bing: "critical habitat beluga" and see their plans for the most heavily populated area in Alaska, the Cook Inlet.
