Sharron Angle Was Once a Registered Democrat
CBS News ^ | June 16, 2010 | Stephanie Condon

Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.

Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.

"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."

In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.

The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.

"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."

“I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared,” he said.”

Definitely agree with this statement, though maybe for a different reason than Cornyn. Harry Reid is going to call in every political favor, use every campaign trick, and throw out every accusation he can to win this race. I think Reid can be beaten, and beaten decisively, but he’s not going to go quietly into that good night.

Yes, the campaign-created aura of electability. It’s already fraying.

Lots of Republicans and conservatives used to be Democrats and liberals. You might call it, growing up.

I understand your need to gloat, but can you wait until there is a real issue?

I think Reid can be beaten, and beaten decisively, but he’s not going to go quietly into that good night.

His scam is, his sons are lobbyists and you pay $250k or $300k if you want to talk to the old man.

They aren't going to get off of that gravy train willingly, they'll go down clawing and scratching all the way.

Of course, Biden had the same deal going with his son until he became VP.

Many people change from Deomcrat to Republican but I think this was the issue

Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

I guess when she went from Republican to Democrat 1984 to 1988 she was not a supporter of Reagan

Reid will have the power of Obama’s campaign team behind him. That means serious dirt, intimidation, theft, assault, and every other possible attack will be used against Angle.

Fortunately the democrats aren’t smart enough to figure out that this seems to make conservative women more popular.

It's an issue when you become a Democrat during the Reagan years. It's shows HORRIBLE judgment.

Alot of us were

I was never a registered Democrat, nor a formal member of the party, but I was a member of Young Democrats while in High School. (In Texas no one is a registered anyting, but they may be a party member). My first, and only, state convention cured me of that. The slightly older (college age) delegates were always trying to put the moves on the more attractive High School girls. (Including one I was somewhat enamored with, and who at least treated me civily). They also went around trading votes, including those that were not theirs to trade, like mine.

Man was he PO'd when I voted against his position. But he never asked nor tried to convince me of his position, so F&#( him. (it's only what he wanted to do to JW) :) Rat politicos haven't changed much since the late '60s, have they? :)
