I asked you a question. Travis ascribed motives.

I asked you a question.

Which I have answered 4 times now. While YOU have NEVER addressed your personal attack on me.

Interesting.

Interesting that I’m a Christ-follower who is passionate about defending this family against unjust criticism?

I am happy as you are in that photo, for the girl. Both for the fact that she was bold and courageous enough to sail halfway around the globe in a boat she did not build, one that had problems which she dealt with, and that while demasted — and upset, she used the RIGHT technology — just like you are PROUD of your own self-built boats technology — to be rescued.

I am not happy, though, to see you operating in these seas under a rudder of envy.

Interesting that you freely engage in what you condemn others for while professing Christ.

Nope. I’m not going beyond the information I have at hand to form an opinion of your words and question the reasons for the harsh words you (and others) are using.

For some reason you and others are ALL OVER this story, freely dishing out condemnation. There are so many stories going on right now; why damn this family, ascribing motives that you JUST DO NOT KNOW? Especially when you DO NOT have all the facts?

Yes, again, I am passionate about defending those who are on the receiving end of such nastiness.

And you still avoid the point.

The “point” is this: Let’s stop demonizing this family when we truly do not know their motives.

It’s fine to critique her route during this season, and to question the equipment she used, and the timing of the voyage. But let’s not damn her parents as simply out for fame and fortune at the expense of their daughter. We do not know that, and to assume we know their motives is just unfair.

Is there another “point” that you see here, something I’m avoiding?

You could always try reading what other sailors are saying.

Of course, tehy don't agree with you.

You have no intention of addressing anything directly that's been said to you. I have better things to do.

OK, I’ve spent some time reading through that discussion. Lots of personal attacks against her — because she didn’t wear shoes, because she’s a Christian, because her dad prays, and so on. They’re even calling her dad illiterate.

There’s a lot of heat there, but not much light.

OK, I’ve just re-read every exchange you and I have had. I’ve addressed each question you’ve asked, and responded to each point you’ve made.

Is there a question you’ve asked that I haven’t replied to, or a comment of yours that I have not addressed?

Bottom line: It’s OK to critique the route, the ship, the season, the timing. But it’s no OK to demonize this young woman’s parents, ascribing to them motives that we just do not know.

As I recall you are a Navy guy.

I have been told that even the US Navy thinks twice about going past the Cape in Winter.

Also, there is a very long list of large ships lost in the area. There are even rumors that two Supertankers have gone down near where Abby was rescused.

I also have read several stories about small boats being run over by large ships in some sea lanes around the Cape due to the limited space.

I sure don't know what you were reading.

Post4358 His is a great story of self reliance in the face of overwhelming odds. Abby didn't seem to look for alternatives. She was only 170 miles upwind from Ile St. Paul, which has an ideal, totally protected anchorage, and conditions were moderating. I think she had a good shot at sailing the boat there, without a stick, in 3-4 days if she cut the rig away. Or, if her diesel still worked, I suspect she easily had enough fuel to motor there in a couple of days, or 3-4 if she was able to secure the rig and drag it with her. It will be interesting to hear her side of the story.

Post 4360 By contrast from the close up pictures we've seen today Abby had not even started trying to get things straightened away. Lines trailing off. Fuel cans strewn. She has not even cleared the debris from the life raft.

Of course if she had no power she may have had no GPS. My guess is she also had no sextant (nor does show know how to use one). I'm confident she could find Australia without power. I doubt she could find Ile St Paul. Does she know how to plot a course on paper without a plotter?

Post 4363 God, you would think she at least had a handheld GPS as a backup.

Post 4366 Have you seen the video where she gives a tour of the boat?

The telling statement is when she is down in the nav station as she literally says "And this where I control everything on the boat from."

No, you idiot, you control the boat from on deck, at the helm and working the sheets and winches, not from the friggin nav station!!!!!!

Post 4380 I'm basing it on the fact that she went to sea on a vessel that was not ready. If she did not know it was not ready then she didn't have enough experience to make the trip.

I'm basing it on the fact that in the two days after the dismasting, when she herself thought she would have to wait weeks for rescue, she had done almost nothing in the area of basic seamanship.

And what are they doing there? DISCUSSING THE FACTS ABOUT GEAR, ROUTE, AND SO ON.

What are people doing here that I am challenging? ASCRIBING MOTIVES TO THE PARENTS, CALLING THE MONEY-GRUBBING MEDIA WHORES.

Do you REALLY not understand the difference between the two types of communication?

Are you jealous that she’s accomplished more in 16 years than you have in your entire life? Do you feel like a loser compared to her, and your final solution is to destroy her?

Do you REALLY not understand that her parents are responsible for sending her out there UNPREPARED? Do you want me to post the ones that call her father clueless and a cult leader? They are there. On that forum. I posted the ones showing that Abby is considered incapable.

What are people doing here that I am challenging?

Giving their opinion. You don't like their opinion. This is a discussion board. People give their opinion. It is not one of the rules that you have to like their opinion.

Have a Good Day.

He called her parents “Balloon Boy media-whore fame-grubbers” — without having all the information about their motives. He is extremely emotional about this issue.

Explain to me, then, how they do not fit this description by sending their daughter out, ill-equiped, in the southern winter to sail the ocean in conditions that professionals who have years of experience won't sail.

Purely and simply they wanted the record and the media accolades that go with it. That is the only logical conclusion. Were this not the case, the timing would have been adjusted to avoid conditions that could have killed her, as they nearly did.

I understand that she could easily succumb in stormy seas in other areas, but you don't tempt fate by doing something that rational folks would not do.

This is akin to holding onto a metal pole in a lightning storm.
