Europe Could Face Hundreds Of Iranian Missiles - Gates By REUTERS June 17, 2010
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence showing Iran likely would have the capability to attack Europe with "scores or even hundreds" of missiles factored into the Obama administration's decision to overhaul missile defenses, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday.
Citing the growing Iranian missile threat, the United States announced plans last September to integrate sea- and land-based missile defenses in and around its NATO allies in Europe, referred to as the "phased adaptive approach."
"One of the elements of the intelligence that contributed to the decision on the phased adaptive array (approach) was the realization that if Iran were actually to launch a missile attack on Europe, it wouldn't be just one or two missiles, or a handful," Gates said at a congressional hearing.
"It would more likely be a salvo kind of attack, where you would be dealing potentially with scores or even hundreds of missiles."
Gates voiced confidence that upgraded missile interceptors in development "would give us the ability to protect our troops, our bases, our facilities and our allies in Europe."
Gates said having those interceptor systems in place by around 2020 was critical not only because of the missile threat from Iran and North Korea, but because "I think by 2020 we may well see it from other states, especially if we're unsuccessful in stopping Iran from building nuclear weapons."

Is the EU still anti-Israel? Because Israel will get hit first, before Ahmadnutjob attacks Europe.
Well, if we closed our bases and brought our troops home from Europe, who cares if Iran destroys the whole damn continent?
We've been paying for the defense of Europe for FAR TOO LONG. It's about time they start defending themselves, plus we just can't afford it anymore.
I'm all for missile defense, but I'm for a missile defense of us, not Europe or our alleged allies.
I don’t suppose they mention that Obama withdrew from deploying the missile defenses which had been negotiated by Bush as soon as he got in office. What an inconvenient truth!
Whats wrong with neutron bombs and EMP’s... and send their technological world back to the stone age?
Oh! That wont work, a surgical removal would only allow them to pursue it and rebuild again.
A person also has to ask, what kind of attack would they use? That is what they would understand.....
Knowing what we know today, it is foolish to allow the problem to grow to unmanageable dimensions.
You neglect that now we are the largest muslim nation that we cannot bomb a muslim nation.
Israel has a fairly robust missile defense system in place and they are likely to improve it over the next decade. It is not cost effective to try to shoot down the bottle rockets coming out of Lebanon and Gaza, a TBM out of Iran is another thing. And the Iranians know for certain that if they they take a potshot at Israel, Tehran is a city of glass.
I don’t see how “phased adaptive approach.” addresses North Korea. We do have realtively good coverage, with interceptors in Fort Greeley and several radars covering NK ... but phased adaptive approach basically gives up midcourse defense and relies on THAAD, SM3 and Patriot. There is no chance of midcourse defense of Europe or strengthing existing US midcourse defense.
I think when obama’s friends - the enemies of the US - launch the war, they are going to attack the US and Europe as well.
Gates is worried about 2020 when we may not even make it to November of this year.
