One-third of the way through Obama's term, are Americans tiring of a legislator as president?

American voters have taken many zigs and zags over the years when choosing their country's chief executive.

But one of the amazing consistencies is: They prefer chief executives in the executive office. Five of the last six presidents have been executives -- four governors and one sitting vice president.

The only exception is the current incumbent, Barack Obama, who as his bipartisan critics tried to point out in 2007-08, had never even run a candy store, let alone a country. He was a law lecturer, a state senator and, briefly, a U.S. senator. He is one of only three sitting senators elected president since the 19th century. Neither of the other two -- Warren Harding (see photo) and John Kennedy -- had second terms.

Obama is neither a leader nor competent. Impeachment should be part of the GOP platform in 2010.

Oh, wait that was him bypassing [voting against] legislation which would recognize the survivors of abortions as living people and allow hospitals to care for them.

Obama has no capacity for sympathy or empathy...he doesn't give a flip about those poor people except as he can use them to push his agenda!

BTW, I agree with Barton before he apologized. Obama has $20 Billion now to spend the way he wants it spent....by his czar!

No executive experience is one important aspect, but there is one much much deeper: Barack Obama, like Bill Clinton, is the product of an irresponsible abandoning father.

There is NO way that Barack Obama could ever ever be a genuine leader. And the powers behind him have known and used it.

He was the Chicago political machines front man in Congress. Unless somebody told him how to vote, he was just "Present".

While I agree with the gist of the article, it’s a bit misleading to say that neither of the other 2 Senators had 2nd terms. They both died in office. Based on all polling and information, both Harding and Kennedy easily would have won reelection had they survived and ran.

Great cartoon.

I’ve seen so many recently, but it’s too bad that this greatness comes from such a repulsive situation.

I don’t blame Zero for the accident (well, the jury’s still out vis a vis the campaign contributions and negligent oversight) but I most definitely blame him for the appalling lack of co-ordination on the cleanup.

Zero’s Katrina indeed. In spades. A million times WORSE for the citizens of ALL the Gulf Coast states affected, not to mention the fisheries and wildlife.

Okay we need to have a “get a grip” moment here. The Pubbies do not have the stones to impeach the HISTORIC, INCREDIBLE, BLACK WHO HATES TO BE AMERICAN PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD. They fold like a cheap lawn chair whenever Obama snorts at the Constitution. Race politics has these guys by the short hair....

True, certainly of Kennedy (I wasn't around when Harding died). But the salient point should be that, Harding excepted, Senators only beat other senators. Which means that it was stupid to nominate McCain or any other senator in ' 08. Any of the governors who contended for the nomination would have done better than McCain - and very likely would have won.

The other point to make is that cream rises to the top quickly; it's up or out in the presidential sweepstakes. Once you become a governor or senator, the clock starts ticking - and if you don't attain POTUS or at least VP within 14 years, you ain't likely ever to be elected POTUS.

So trying to elect a three-term senator as POTUS is doubly a fool's errand.

Oh, and BTW a VP is not an executive, and only two sitting VP's have ever been elected POTUS (three counting Adams, who was elected VP before the 12th Amendment changed the election process for VP). Put differently, only Andrew Jackson and Ronald Reagan won third terms vicariously thru their sitting VPs who had been their running mates eight years earlier.

McCain was selected by open primary crossover votes. The democrats thought [correctly] he would be the easiest to defeat.

He also had the virtue of not being a natural born citizen. This was a double bonus, he couldn’t raise the question about their boy wonder without shooting himself in the foot, and in the unlikely event of him winning they could beat him like a rented mule over his non-nbc status.

Unlike the current occupant, everyone would have standing to pursue court cases, and the Constitutional eligibility issue would be a topic of wall-to-wall coverage by the MSM, and be a daily topic of discussion in the democrat dominated congress.

I doubt they’d ever actually get around to actually impeaching him (president Palin??? The horror!!!), but he’d be rendered totally ineffectual.

Open primaries. Let your party’s opponents select your candidate. Brilliant.

Agreed. Although I doubt anyone would have beaten Obama in 2008. Once the economy fell apart and the market crashed the die was cast. You honestly think if everything remained the same with the economy, Huckabee or Romney would have beaten him?
