US, Israel Warships in Suez May Be Prelude to Faceoff with Iran
Aryta Sheva ^ | 6/20/2010 | Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

Egypt allowed at least one Israeli and 11 American warships to pass through the Suez Canal as an Iranian flotilla approaches Gaza. Egypt closed the canal to protect the ships with thousands of soldiers, according to the British-based Arabic language newspaper Al Quds al-Arabi.

One day prior to the report on Saturday, Voice of Israel government radio reported that the Egyptian government denied an Israeli request not to allow the Iranian flotilla to use the Suez Canal to reach Gaza, in violation of the Israeli sea embargo on the Hamas-controlled area.

International agreements require Egypt to keep the Suez open even for warships, but the armada, led by the USS Truman with 5,000 sailors and marines, was the largest in years. Egypt closed the canal to fishing and other boats as the armada moved through the strategic passageway that connects the Red and Mediterranean Seas.

*I* HIGHLY doubt this is anything of importance. Do you really think O has the intestinal fortitude to take on Iran? This was probably a normal exercise, or the ships were heading into the gulf for a scheduled deployment.

You’re probably right, but Iran may perceive it as a provocation. Who knows. I imagine this coming week will be interesting.

You know, I’m getting the impression that 0bama has been patted on the head and told to run out and play (while the adults work)

“Eleven US warships, one Israeli vessel transit Suez Canal to Persian Gulf”
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 19, 2010, 7:54 PM (GMT+02:00)

0bama might not ‘do’ something. He’s not the one in control in the situation.

I wonder if he’ll ever set foot in israel.

For our president, it’s not about Iran...it’s about Israel.

Nah, this sounds like a routine rotation, and an Israeli vessel just tagged along, but will likely not deploy past the Red Sea.

I heard that was the topic of conversation between "don't mess with" Joe and the Messiah on the trek from the 6th green to the 7th tee off.

I agree.

Damn it, we need to stick to sanctions for they have been effective repeatedly hundreds of times before!

USS Truman Pictures, Images and Photos

The American flotilla is to STOP Israel from bombing Iran, the Israeli ship passing through at the same time is just a diplomatic fig leaf.

Every US Navy Fleet has an area of operations under the overall command of the fleet's Admiral.
They are permitted to operate independently and proactively if need be to prevent hostilities.

Only if hostilities are a clear and present danger do they “have” to confer with the central command—not that they are not conferring all along as it is.

At any rate, there is no need to interrupt the Obumble golf tournaments over this yet.

As president he is dangerous but as CinC he is deadly.

WHYWHYWHYWHYWHY DID WE SCREW UP SO BAD ELECTING SUCH A NOXIOUS DOLT PRESIDENT???

Well,Navy amphibs have carried GIs in the past, but usually only for big beach assaults like Normandy and Okinawa.

But I'm sure in this case the writer just doesn't know any better.

Harry Truman (also known as HST within the Navy) is 1,092 ft (333 m) long, 257 ft (78 m) wide and is as high as a twenty-four-story building, at 244 feet (74 m). The super carrier can accommodate approximately 80 aircraft and has a flight deck 4.5 acres (18,000 m²) in size, using four elevators that are 3,880 ft² (360 m²) each to move planes between the flight deck and the hangar bay. With a combat load, HST displaces almost 97,000 tons and can accommodate 6,250 crew members.
