What Are The Top 5 Worst Government Services?
Mackinac Center for Public Policy ^ | 6/21/2010 | Jarrett Skorup

To qualify for an award the nominee must be government run, backed or financed, and fail a "Yellow Book" test, meaning that if a private company found in the Yellow Pages can do the work, the government should get out.

The nominees are, in reverse order: Veterans Hospitals, Post Office, General Motors, Public Schools and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

For an explanation of why, please click to read.

White House would be top of the list.

Wouldn’t it be easier to list the functioning areas of government? I mean that list would be very short.

Government schools should top the list. The others are merely inefficient; government schools destroy children’s minds and futures and our country.

Services? Well, the least competent or efficient is Congress... since those guys were elected to ‘serve’ (even though they consistently find ways to avoid that or else to serve themselves, instead)

Economist Justin Ross points out that for 44 cents one can either mail a letter through the USPS — or buy a kiwi fruit "grown and watered in New Zealand, picked, carefully packaged, and shipped across the world to a store near you."

When they can deliver the kiwi to my door for 44 cwnts then we'll talk.

I’m stunned that Medicare and Medicaid didn’t make the list. Doctors are fleeing Medicare in droves; they fled Medicaid years ago. These 2 public health insurance plans are the best argument against government-run medicine that I know.

1. Government
2. Government
3. Government
4. Government
5. Government

That was easy.

Allow private delivery of bulk mail to homes and you just might find that they can...

The USPS already contracts out a big chunk of it’s express (domestic and international) business to Fedex, UPS, and DHL. It’s cheaper for the USPS to use a private carrier, than do their own delivery.

I’m sorry, but for my money the USPS is pretty darn good. They may be becoming obsolete, but mailing a regular letter is still cheap and quick. I do wish their hours were better, though.

“Wouldn’t it be easier to list the functioning areas of government? I mean that list would be very short.”

I couldn’t agree more. The only challenge would be in coming up with five areas of government that are worth a damn. I’d probably punt and say “Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines” and just stand around scratching my head for number 5.

What about agencies that shouldn't even exist?

Dept of Education. All that should be handled locally.

Dept of Energy. All that can be handled by private industry. Except the nuclear stuff which could be handed back to the military.

Then of course there's HHS, HUD, Commerce.

All of those should be handed back to the states.

No thank you. That would be a nightmare.

The NRC is heavily funded by the utilities/hospitals/rad-waste handlers already. It wouldn't take much to make it a self-policing watchgroup.
