N.J. Millionaires Tax Plan Fails (another victory for Gov Christie)

TRENTON, N.J. - Democrats in the New Jersey Assembly have failed to override the Republican governor's veto of a tax surcharge on millionaires.

Monday's vote was strictly along party lines. All 47 Assembly Democrats voted for the override and all 33 Republicans voted against it. The measure needed seven GOP votes to advance.

The one-year surcharge would have raised about $600 million by increasing income taxes nearly two percent on the state's 16,000 highest wage earners.

Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the tax last month after the Legislature passed it along party lines. The governor vetoed the tax because it would deter hiring, Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said.

Democrats did not plan on using the money to close a huge budget shortfall. The plan was to use the money to restore property tax rebates to 600,000 senior citizens and the disabled. They also wanted to put Republicans on the record for voting against the proposal.

I’m all for this but I just read that a budget deal was reached with the Legislature which restores $22,000,000 more dollars for adult welfare. I’m very sorry but quite a few of the people who will receive this largess are not vulnerable. They are lazy layabouts who feel as if they are owed something by society. They should be cutting welfare like you would cut a diseased limb of a tree.

I just wonder if there are enough people in New Jersey with a basic concept of fairness. This millionaire's tax seems like such a crude, ugly, bald use of government power. Crude, ugly, and bald.....hmmmm...

It's such a wise guy style attempt to demand more tribute from people with money, and then give it out to other people, with the Democrat party as the sponsor.

It's not just a Jersey thing, though. Government is a racket. Literally. It's just like the way Henry Hill explained it in GoodFellas:

All they got from Paulie was protection from other guys looking to rip them off. That's what it's all about. That's what the FBI can never understand - that what Paulie and the organization offer is protection for the kinds of guys who can't go to the cops. They're like the police department for wiseguys.
The government works exactly the same way. You've got rival gangs competing for power, each with its own constituency to protect from the other. It works this way in prison, too, where they break it down by simple racial lines. Same premise though. You need a gang because they have gangs. And in many ways, your gang is chosen for you by the way things are.

..........hhhhhhmmmmm ,,,,, Maryland passed a Millionaires tax almost two years ago and now we have very few left most taking flight to more tax friendlier states ,,,, and who will make up that lost revenue ???? ,,,,,, as Tony Hayward would say ,,, the “ little people “ . Very effective that millionaires tax ,,,, that is in scaring a revenue base to the high ground and Christie is smart enough to know it ,,, on the other hand Gov. O’Malley of Md. ,,,,, dumber than $h!+ ........................

So if some guy made 5 million, he would have to pay an extra 100,000.00 in tax. This is no different than reaching into some guys back pocket, and stealing his wallet. The millionaires left Maryland because they were pissed, not because it would ruin them.
