The Well from Hell
petroleumworld.com ^ | 06/20/10 | Christian A. DeHaemer

There is something primordial about BP's quest for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. It's an Icarus-like story of super-ambition; of reaching too far, delving too deep.

I don't know if you've stopped to contemplate what BP was trying to do...

The well itself started 5,000 feet below the surface. That's the depth of the Grand Canyon from the rim.

And then the company attempted to drill more than 30,000 feet below that — Mt. Everest would give 972 feet to spare.

Furthermore, the company sought oil in a dangerous area of the seabed.

It was unstable and many think BP sought it out because seismic data showed huge pools of methane gas — the very gas that blew the top off Deepwater Horizon and killed 11 people.

its full of methane gas for sure...but maybe they are shutting down the gulf for another reason...monopoly.

Obama was premature about his ‘woke up this AM and saw no cracks in the earth’ comment.

Hm. I wonder why they'd do that, what with all the easy drilling areas leftists and environmentalists make available to energy companies.

I’m always wary of articles that contain “many say” and “some think” throughout the piece.

Because they are(bandit), & we are the train that got robbed.

Too bad, these wells are better left alone as they feed the shallow wells.

BP: Methane gas bubble triggered oil rig blast

http://www.fox10tv.com/dpps/news/national/bp:-methane-gas-bubble-triggered-oil-rig-blast_3347994

“The deadly blowout of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico was triggered by a bubble of methane gas that escaped from the well and shot up the drill column, expanding quickly as it burst through several seals and barriers before exploding”

It’s not like BP had a choice, or anything.
It was either drill in DEEP water, or NOT DRILL at all.
All the easy, shallow water is OFF LIMITS don’cha know.

FWIW, I think you’ll find gas pressure is the root cause of most any blowout.

And Obama knew Feb. 13th, 6 weeks before the explosion, and BP had asked for his help...

Nah, nevermind, our Obamamedia wouldn’t dare report that.

Yep. "Some say that lazy writers use the phrase "Some Say" as a more pleasant euphemism for "I pulled this quote out of my own butt" ".

Lots of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doom) surrounding this oil leak, and it's getting fanned by the MSM. Things are bad, certainly, but nowhere near as bad as anyone is claiming. "100,000 barrels a day" for instance, just doesn't make any sense.

But, I suppose, "Well, there's a leak, but it'll be be contained in a few weeks, and it's not nearly as bad as the gov't is claiming" doesn't sell too many newspapers.

Downhole pressure had been measured. NOT 100,000 psi. Not even close to 100,000 psi. MEASURED pressure was 13000 psi. Which is plenty enough to cause the BP blowout, but not the ludicrous stuff at your link.

False information.

The author is confusing the leaking oil well with a well drilled last year by BP using the Deepwater Horizon.

For example, the leaking well is about 18,000 feet total depth from the ocean surface.

Doesn’t it amaze you how people ignore the fact that the pressure in this field was contained by drilling mud? The failure occurred while the mud was being replaced with the lighter sea water. It seems it must be a magic well with vastly changing depths and pressures.

"It seems it must be a magic well with vastly changing depths and pressures."

Don't forget the magically appearing methylene chloride and high radioactivity levels. The eco-scare-artists are pushing ALL the buttons on this one.
