No. Many came forward to claim it was them but not positively proven. The nurse regrets she didn't get his phone number. She too wondered who he was.
As to the identity of the sailor, there was also testimony that the picture was taken earlier and that it was actually posed. I know about this because it was my friend (now deceased), who told his story after the death of his wife. This story was written up in the Wall Street Journal (maybe 1996), and he was roundly attacked and criticized. I don’t know where the truth was, but what my friend said made a lot of sense.
Enlisted army uniforms have sure changed since 1945! < /sarc >
I was in the USAF, and went to a joint USAF/USN school in Texas way back in the days. Most of the sailors in the class had those dragons on their blues, but there were no SPs around, just Air Police. All they were concerned with was airmen having their hands in their pockets.
Why is he wearing blues (winter uniform) in mid-August? Another sailor in the background is in the proper whites. Was there a different uniform code back then? Lends some credibility to the staged story.
In any event, condolences to the family of the woman.
Man, you guys bring back some memories for sure. I love the part about the APs being concerned about hands in pockets as Sailors walked the base flashing dragons on cuffs, that’s great.
Also Leg, remember, we used to tailor our jumpers (as you did too). Looking at some sailors I see today with blousy jumpers and absolutely shapeless white hats makes me grind my teeth, and I’m not seeing “boots” either, some NCOs with that goofy look.
You know, you want to show them how to at least LOOK like a sailor...
Saw a Machinist’s Mate in whites who played solo trumpet during a special ceremony here in Central Texas. Looked great, tailored jumper, good white hat shape, gave him a Bravo Zulus on uniform, appearance and attitude. It did my heart good.
God bless her and all of that generation who accomplished the greatest victory of all time. I bet the Lord will give her the biggest kiss ever when she strides inside those pearly gates.
Bears repeating! These are our heroes who asked for nothing but gave their all.

None of this has anything to do with Edith, who was by all accounts a great lady. RIP.
Today's America?
Sexual harassment, injured back, neck, trauma to the spine area, attempted rape, assault....All this has left the victim depressed and suicidal, unable to eat or sleep, even thought the victim is claiming unending nightmares, and filing multiple charges against the police for not responding quickly enough, and failing to talk nice to her.
There’s a good way? :)
Another icon gone.
My tailored set fit like a glove. The jumper has a hidden zipper along the right side seam. The bell bottoms don’t flare until just below the knees. Never wore boots except in foul weather or high seas. It was usually steel toed boondockers for deck work. Still have and sometimes use my old K bar rigging knife with the folding marlinspike. Handed down to me from a retiring old bosun mate friend. He got it from another old sailor. Has at least four sets of initials carved into the sides. Made a lot of extra money using it to make eye splices and monkey fists for civilian boaters.
Of course, thilly thailor. Just “Don’t ask. Don’t tell.”.
