Large Hadron Collider: scientists create sound of ‘God particle’

Sounds set to be made by the subatomic ‘God’ particle at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have been simulated by scientists aiming to make the £6bn experiment more accessible.

Finding the Higgs boson – also known as the God particle – is the primary aim of the LHC experiment because it will provide an insight into the nature of all matter. It is hoped the subatomic particle will emerge from the 27km circular tunnel under the Swiss-French border where beams of proton particles are being smashed together.

LHC Sound, a collaboration of particle physicists, musicians and artists in London, has converted data expected from collisions into sounds in a process called sonification.

The data was provided by the LHC's Atlas experiment which includes a calorimeter measuring the energy from collisions. The note and pitch of the sound varies with the amount of energy recorded.

LHC Sound is planning live performances of the data during the summer but early simulations of the particles can be heard here.

“Unfortunate” no school textbooks will ever be able to discuss what these scientists have done.

Sounds more like government money (ours) going to leftists on the dole. Musicians and the Higg's boson called science? The story is about musicians digitizing collisions. How's that for creative composition?

How do you play it backwards?

That’s if your looking for the DOG particle.

It’s usually found by standing on one foot
and examining the bottom of the other.

LOL!

Oh, the dilemma...

Thanks to Bubba Clinton killing and then destroying the Super-Conducting SuperCollider in Texas, this occurred at the CERN facilities in Switzerland instead of the SCSC facilities in Texas 10 years ago.

Good work, Dems!!

Playing it backwards I swear it sounds like “I buried Paul”

So, you're saying that the Dog Particle sounds like "I buried Paul"? Now we're getting into Son of Sam territory ...

It is hoped the subatomic particle will emerge from the 27km circular tunnel ...

If it sees its shadow, does that mean six more eternities of winter?

it would be funny if God showed up at the Hadron Collider looking for one of his particles.

"Give Me that back right now!"

"Don't let Me come down there!"

IOW, they are making it up out of whole cloth, in order to placate some, and attempt to show something coming out of the $6 billion price tag.

This isn't science. It's silly.

It’s the sound of a million head-crabs coming in our direction.

And Gordon Freeman banging a crowbar on each of them.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Oh He will show up. Whether they've got the sound right or not. Even if they manage to create a black hole that doesn't behave as current theory indicates it should, and I believe it should, but rather ends up swallowing the earth, He'll be there.

“It is hoped the subatomic particle will emerge from the 27km circular tunnel ...”

This is all well and good until they discover that there’s a sub-subatomic particle and that the universe is not as we thought it was - again.

No they are not "making it up". They admit freely that this is what they expect, based on simulations constructed according to the current theories. They have not yet gotten any real data, and did expect to have at this point. If the theories are incorrect, it may "sound" considerably different, or they may find something entirely different than the Higgs boson is predicted to be.

They needed to do the simulations anyway, so running the simulated data through this audioliser system, they get to test it as well.

It shouldn’t be sound anymore, rather like listening to light. Can we listen to light? Yes, through our pores and through the minds eye that also subs as an ear. We seeingly hear what we absorb. This borders unto mysticism and maybe their is a natural, bodily connection to God or his road map particles, after all. Following that connection, absorbing the universe leads to the one place called home. Angels played cornets at home comings, always a return. Road map and building blocks are one and the same. Seeing and hearing is believing. The God particle is not a big band but a big bang.
