I don't even live in Alabama (some household goods were picked up there), but my company inadvertently sent them over $521. I sent in a AL NR40 (non-resident tax form) with a letter explaining the circumstances back in early April.
I just check the AL DOR website Where's my Refund? site and it says:
Your return has been received, and it is being processed. The processing time varies for each return. You should receive your refund check 8 to 12 weeks from today.
What the heck is that all about?

I got my Alabama refund February 21st 2010.
Filing early is the key!

CA did this last year. It is a dumb move because taxpayers will take steps to withhold less next year and not get caught again.

Move to Tennessee they don’t have any state income tax, just a high sales tax.

I filed my North Carolina return with a $724 expected refund at the end of February. It took them THREE MONTHS to even change the status from “not received” to “processing.” Now it’s been almost another month and it’s still “processing.”
They’re sitting on the money to pay for everything else in government. Basically, we’re last in line to get OUR money back from “OUR” government. And yet we keep putting the same people back in charge, election after election.

Texas hasn’t sent me my state income tax refund check either. :-(
That’s one downside of living in a state without a state income tax, but I can live with it.

Feel lucky that you are not getting an IOU like the taxpayers of California are getting for last year and how many more years to come?

My neighbor here in CA is still waiting for both state and federal. He filed late March.

last year here in MA I got a tax refund from the state, this year they sent me a notice to remind me to pay taxes on the amount of money that they refunded me last year, so in plain english I have to pay taxes this year on the money I was OVERTAXED last year!

Maybe Alabama is waiting for an Obama bailout. Word on the street is that he has a mighty big stash that he’s sharing with just about every who has their hand out: banks, auto companies, unions, state governments etc.

"...continue to be processed for the next month or two" August???? SEPTEMBER??? If I were five months late sending in my taxes, they'd start garnishment proceeding! Maybe that's the answer -- put a lein on the Capitol building or something.
