Skip to comments.Dick Morris: McChrystal's Attack Hurts Obama's Left Wing Base

General Stanley McChrystals interview in Rolling Stone Magazine will do a lot to damage further President Obamas standing among liberals and Democrats and will undermine his chances of keeping control of Congress in 2010.
To conservative voters and commentators, his comments underscore doubts about Obamas competence. To the Administrations spokespeople, the interview shows a lack of proper subordination in the chain of command. But to the voters of the left, the key import of his comments is that the general in charge of the war in Afghanistan basically said the war is not being won, and perhaps cannot be won.
Obamas decision to fire McChrystal guarantees that the story will now share page one with the Gulf oil spill, focusing liberal attention on Obamas two cardinal sins in liberal eyes the oil spill and the war in Afghanistan. Relieving the general of command sends a message that Obama is thin-skinned, arrogant, and easily offended.
Coming at the same time that the failure of the Obama Administration to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf is already rankling liberal voters, the McChrystal comments will add to their doubts about Obama. They already are against his decision to send additional troops there and have long believed that we should not be fighting in Afghanistan. By calling attention to how badly the war is going and the disarray in the presidents foreign policy apparatus, the McChrystal interview can only highlight and underscore these concerns and further dampen liberal enthusiasm for Obama.
Neither the oil spill nor the Afghan War will drive any liberals to vote for conservatives or induce Democrats to vote Republican. But they both will hold down Democratic turnout and reinforce cynicism about the Obama presidency on the left. Those initially attracted by Obamas charisma will be driven away by these twin failures.
The Democratic Party is really a synthesis of environmentalists and peace advocates with a few gay rights activists and public employee unions thrown in. Now, Obama has alienated both the green and the anti-war segments of the party. And the continuing spillage from the Gulf oil well and from the Generals mouth will further damage his standing with his political base.
Whatever the fate of General McChrystal or of the American involvement in the war, the mounting casualty lists will drag down Obamas prospects in November still further and depress his ratings in the days ahead.
Obama has risen far beyond the level of his own incompetence. Hell, he couldn’t even straighten out Chicago!
President Peter Principle
I'm not sure any democratic government in which everyone votes can survive indefinitely.
People are too gullible and easy to manipulate.
Nothing new there...if they needed this incident to grasp this they just haven't been paying attention.
can we stop promoting dick morris. He’s a dumb hack of the worst kind. I know he’s an ally, but he’s still a dishonest person who would say anything
I agree. Can’t turn on Fox without seeing his mug. I don’t really trust him; after all, he did serve under the Clintons.
Dick Morris is more of a comedian, than a political analyst. If I was eighteen again, and watched Dick nightly...I’d be thinking this is the career for me.
Chicago is more dangerous than Kabul!
I agree I am sick and tired of seeing the TOE SUCKER on Fox selling his book. I don't care what he thinks. He worked for the Chicken choker and his fat ugly wife.
“Obama’s Left Wing Base”
People you see on the street, at work, in your own family. “Obama’s Left Wing Base” are insane, utterly destructive media robots.
Nobody can straighten out Chicago. It's the political corruption capital of the world. Washington and Springfield come close, but nobody beats Chicago for greed, graft and corruption. We're looking forward to what comes out during the Blagojevich trial. There's so much more to come.
Until he was dumped by billy boy cause Morris infuriated Hillary.
That little ,”f-ing Jew bastard”.
And how much of Morris’ statements are sage advice and insight, and how much consists of sour grapes?
To be honest, I wish Fox would find some other new people once in a while. Seems the network consults with the same bunch of talking heads all the time.
Exactly. In fact, it's probably not even his strategy (some days I doubt that he's even bright enough to spell the word) but that of some of the arrogant, anti-military bumblers surrounding him. They're doing the least they can possibly do and still make it look as if they want to win, because while the left might not care if we abruptly pulled out and handed it over to the Taliban, many normal Americans would be quite upset. That's the only thing that worries them.
A whole lot of talking heads not worth a used band aide.
But ya just know Morris wants to pour some salt on both Clintons if they get cut.
The Left should be mad. Quite simply, Obammy replaced his own guy with Bush’s guy.
How lovely to start the day with a smile!
