Headley Part of al-Qaida Plot to Attack Lockheed Martin

Self-confessed Mumbai plotter David Coleman Headley testified Tuesday that he was part of an al-Qaida inspired plot to assassinate the chief of U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
The plot was the brainchild of Ilyas Kashmiri, leader of the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), and a senior commander of al Qaida’s deadly 313 Brigade.
Headley is the key prosecution witness in the ongoing terrorism trial of a Chicago businessman, Tahawuur Hussain Rana. He used Rana’s immigration office in Mumbai as a cover to scout for targets for the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist strike. Ten gunmen from the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) are suspected of being behind the plot that killed 166 people, including six Americans.
Headley has pleaded guilty to his role in the attacks and agreed to cooperate with federal investigators in exchange for evading the death penalty.
Headley told the jury he used Rana’s computer to research details about Lockheed Martin and its CEO for Kashmiri, who was outraged at American drone strikes in Pakistan and wanted to attack the U.S. defense contractor in retaliation.
“There was a plan to kill him because he was making drones,” Headley said.

SNIPPET: “A Harkat-ul Jihad Islami spokesman named Abu Hanzla Kashir told Dawn that Kashmiri was killed in the attack. Kashir also threatened to attack the US to avenge Kashmiri’s death.
“We confirm that our Amir (leader) and commander in chief, Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri, along with other companions, was martyred in an American drone strike on June 3, 2011, at 11:15 pm,” Kashir told the Pakistani news channel, according to The Telegraph.
“The oppressor US is our only target and, God willing, we will take revenge on the U.S. soon with full force,” Kashir said, according to CNN.
US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal said that Kashmiri was indeed a target of the attack, but they could not confirm that he was killed.
“HUJI’s statement is a sure sign we got him, we are pretty confident he is dead but we cannot confirm 100 percent,” one official told The Long War Journal. The area where Kashmiri was killed is under Taliban control.”
This is excellent news. Kashmiri was a dangerous individual.

One US intelligence official told CNN that he was “99 percent sure” Kashmiri was killed. However, no intel official would specify why they believe Kashmiri is indeed dead.
Anonymous sources have since come forward telling Dawn that they believe Kashmiri is alive:
Sources revealed that Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri, the commander of Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami (HuJI), who was reportedly killed in a US drone attack in South Waziristan last month, is still alive, DawnNews reported.
Sources said that security officials of the United States and Pakistan failed to confirm the death of the HuJI commander.
He is still active in the border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, sources added.
Note that The Long War Journal has been agnostic on reports of Kashmiri’s death, as our sources have been unwilling to say that he was killed. Also, and perhaps most importantly, al Qaeda hasn’t issued a statement announcing his death; the purported martyrdom statement released by an individual claiming to be from HUJI is more than questionable; and an accompanying photograph said to be of Kashmiri’s corpse was actually that of a member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba suicide assault squad that attacked Mumbai in November 2008.
On another occasion, nearly two years ago, Kashmiri was also reported to have been killed, in a Predator strike back in September 2009. That report was quickly debunked one month later, however, when Kashmiri was interviewed by Syed Saleem Shahzad, the recently slain reporter from the Asia Times and AKI.”

The threat was made by a frequent poster on a site where Al Qaeda messages often appear first online in the US, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The individual apparently took offense at a joke made by Letterman on his CBS talkshow, in which the comedian made light of the death of accused terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri.
The online commenter wrote: “Is there not amongst you a Sayyid Nosair al-Masri (may Allah release him) to cut the tongue of this lowly Jew and shut it forever.
“He showed his evil nature and deep hatred for Islam and Muslims, and said that Ilyas Kashmiri was killed and he joined bin Laden. We ask Allah to paralyze his tongue and grant the sincere monotheists his neck.””
