Revealed: McChrystal Banned Fox News From His Headquarters
Mediaite.com ^ | 06/24/2010 | Glynnis MacNicol

Posted on 06/24/2010 8:41:33 AM PDT by OldDeckHand

Now that Gen. McChrystal is officially out and Gen. Petraeus has taken the reins, juicy little tidbits (that, to be honest, might not have otherwise interested prior to the Rolling Stone piece) about McChrystal are making the blogosphere rounds.

Buried in a longish post by Marc Ambinder about the aftermath of the McChrystal removal was this little morsel: McChrystal apparently was not a fan of Fox News.

Now it can be told. The story about him voting for Obama is not contrived. He is a political liberal. He is a social liberal. He banned Fox News from the television sets in his headquarters. Yes, really. This serves to put to rest another false rumor: that McChrystal deliberately precipitated his firing because he wants to run for President.

Conservatives shouldn't be so quick to defend McChrystal, as it's increasingly clear McChrystal is ideologically similar, perhaps even identical, to Obama.

McChrystal didn't criticize policy, he criticized personalities - a sign of a small man. There's no reason to believe he has any substantive disagreement with Obama on any military policy.

McChrystal had to learn the hard way. His 4 star career is not so glittery anymore, and he can thank his big mouth and Obama.

Hubris. Arrogance. Fatigue - not necessarily in that order, but probably in that order.

He is a political liberal. He is a social liberal.

Which is precisely why he felt so comfortable around Rolling Stone reporters.

There’s a difference between defending the General and criticizing the POtuS he worked for. This was a simple case of a clash of two small men with enormous egos...soldiers have died for these punks for thousands of years...one of these punks just had a bigger title.

Agreed. I am already fed up with the radio hosts rabidly defending McC. They are not considering the restrictive rues of engagement he has created & the harm to our troops.

And, he banned beer.

Getting him out of Afghanistan was the right thing to do, BO sacked him for the wrong reasons.

If so, and the fact that he voted for Bambi, he needs to seek life elsewhere.

Everyone seems to agree he has a warrier mindset. What if he and Petraeus agreed that the Obozo’s timetable for withdrawal was stupid, and that the only way to change it was if McChrystal were to leave command, and Petraeus were to take over and recommend that the timetable be eliminated so as to gain the confidence of the Afghan people?

He's an asshat. Our Divisional TOC had EVERY news channel on, Fox, CNN, MSNBC (groan), HLN, and all the local Arab Channels. We had a dozen monitors on at a time.

Open Source intel sometimes was better than other sources, so we had to have them on and monitored 24-7.

The ideology, in this case, is irrelevant. He wasn’t acting in a political capacity, he was acting in a military capacity, and stating quite clearly that Obama wasn’t up to the task. His liberal bent, in the case, adds to his credibility (i.e. it’s not a clash of political viewpoints).

McChrystal’s ROE’s were/are anathema to our troops. How many are dead because of these ill conceived policies? I blamed O’bummer, initially. Now I think it was mostly McChrystal. Let’s see if Patreaus makes a needed adjustment there.

Perhaps McChrystal didn’t like Fox News because Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is a large stake holder in News Corp.

Having any trust in the ‘news’ would be more telling of supporting any ‘news’ company.

***so why do you think he did what he did?***

He was following orders from his CiC - and the reason for his firing is astounding. His staffers said ugly stuff!!!!

Seems like McChrystal did everything in accordance with BO’s dictates...no FOX for the troops - restrictive rules of engagement.

'A warrior and a liberal at the same time. Mind boggling."

You might be surprised if you don't understand the mindset of MANY of our service academy professors. Some of them are just as liberal, perhaps even more so, than their civilian university counterparts.

The General Paces of the world are a dying breed, and they're being replaced by guys like McChrystal and Mullen - two guys who are clearly social liberals.

Many of the more conservative-leaning officers exit the military after reaching 0-6. It's so insanely political to get your first star, and especially the second star, people who are more conservative leaning, and therefor value meritocracy more than the next guy, just get out rather than continue to put up with the bureaucratic BS.

“Sounds like “Weasel” Clark.”

Yes, agree. One of the reasons I’ve been harsh with him in my postings. He came of age so to speak during the Clinton Administration IIRC, which to me is alarming, but that may be irrelevant.

Regardless until we get rid of the rabid radicals from behind the reins of power no General even as revered as Patraeus will succeed in winning the war in Afghanistan.

The military was the original inspiration for communism: nobody gets rich, everybody gets assigned a job, everyone has free health care, clothes, food, everyone must respect the rulers above including not speaking freely what they really think. Someone meant for military life could survive life in a communist state.

After the deadliest month, so far, of the Afghan war, McChrystal blamed 0bama for all his problems.

What military policy of Barack Obama has McChrystal criticized? None that I can discern. His disagreement have been about personality and style, not substance.

I couldn't care less about personality nor style. I care about the substance of Obama's policies. Those are what I find offensive - domestic policies, foreign policies and military policies.

That’s what I wonder. McC had to approve the article before it ran; it was no accident. He’s disciplined enough (or so I hear) that he wouldn’t have just thrown caution to the wind. I wonder if he did it and then apologized in order to get himself removed, making Obama desperate for cover and putting Petraeus in a position to be able to ask for - and receive - what is needed to win in Afghanistan.

I suppose we’ll never know. But now that the situation is here, I really hope that Petraeus will use the position he’s in to finally have something done right for our troops in Afghanistan. My sister’s brother-in-law is deploying soon as a chaplain in the reserves. He and all the others deserve better than what Obama has been willing to give them.
