I don’t want to start a flame war and don’t pretend to be an expert, but this is my general impression of Mormonism. Joseph Smith, Jr. was a petty criminal who concocted a rather incredible tale that persuaded a whole bunch of believers to endorse some patently self-serving doctrines such as polygyny (yet not polyandry: I wonder why?) and a highly patriarchal power structure in which he was top dog.
They are welcomme to try our world. We will dig trenches and lay them in.

That sums it up really well. Literalist Islam has impeded cultural evolution. In the 21st century millions of people behave as if they were fighting for existence out of a tent in a desert.
Speaking of cousins, marrying them generation after generation hasn't helped, either.

That's also part of Islam, due to the requirement of the groom paying mahr (dowry, but more accurately translated as "bride price"). Marrying cousins keeps the bride price in the family.
