Obama urges all Americans to get tested for AIDS/HIV By Michael O'Brien - 06/25/10 03:24 PM ET

President Barack Obama urged all Americans on Friday to be tested for HIV.

Obama released a statement this afternoon marking National HIV Testing Day on Sunday, and encouraged people to get tested to learn their HIV status, the virus that contributes to AIDS.

"As we mark this day, I would like to renew my call for all Americans to help reduce the risk of infection by getting tested for HIV and learning their HIV status," Obama said in a statement.

"And research shows that people who know their status take better care of themselves and take steps to reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others," he added. "That is why it is so important that people get tested."

Obama noted the advances in research and treatment of HIV and AIDS since the late 1980s and early 1990s, when AIDS was highly stigmatized and seen as an almost-certain death sentence.

He also called on philanthropic and faith-based groups, among other groups, to get involved in helping to fight AIDS.

"[A]ll of us have a responsibility to reduce our risk and know our status, to continue to support those already affected by this disease, and to fight the stigma and discrimination people still face," he said. "So on this National HIV Testing Day, let us all recommit to do our part to help stop the spread of HIV and AIDS."

No thank you. I’m low risk.

Ditto— I am monogamous and not IV drug user sharing needles.
Geez does he ever have a day when he is not in front of the cameras?!

This kind of idiocy is most appealing to millions of Americans.

We have adopted a lot of Kenyan ways, haven’t we? The American people do believe in aid for Kenya but not Kenyan AIDS.

Wanna bet $5 this is a mandated ‘preventive’ care diagnostic required for all health plans hoping to remain in compliance with ZeroCare?

Will someone please publish a list of specific actions/behaviors that cause AIDS?

You can't, really. It wouldn't be politically correct.

Once again, obama reveals how he is not American (not referring to any BC issue). This is such an odd thing to recommend for all Americans, the majority who would never be at risk.

Hmmmm, perhaps this is the precursor to his “announcement” that he's got the HIV.

Being military we get tested quite often.

I’d be happy if he suggested all welfare recipients get tested for drugs!

Yes...and if positive I’ll bet you $5 more this will put time and money limits on ones degree of “worth” in how much care they get...if any.

The TSAification of AIDS. Everyone is a potential terrorist carrier, so screen everyone.

But this is much older than the TSA. This is part of a conscious effort, going on since the late 1980s, to position AIDS as a disease which can infect anyone, not just those in high-risk groups. Sam Kinison had a joke about "heterosexual AIDS" in his act back then. But the left does not want to call out those who engage in risky behavior.

It is illogical, but logic doesn't matter to the left. For years we associated cigarette smoking as a high-risk activity for developing lung cancer. The message went out to stop the risky activity. Anyone remember the Yul Brynner PSA from the grave? We didn't ask everyone to get a chest MRI just so we would not offend the smokers.

It creates unnecessary fear, but fear has always been a political tool.

If this call for testing qualified those who should get tested by saying if you have engaged in the following risky behaviors, you should get tested, there would be howls from the left.

Here is what I want to see. If Obama really thinks everyone should get tested, I want to seem him go to a convent and explain why every nun there needs to be tested.

No thank you, I’m no risk. We are faithful spouses 62 & 70.

Keep the crap out of the blood supply and we will continue to be no risk.

Maybe they should test every one coming out of prison, and inform that person’s partner so they can avoid getting HIV.

From what I understand, regular blood bank supplies were not tested for aids until 1983 or 1984. I needed transfusions for major surgery back then and found out later that the blood was not tested for aids. I have since had several tests which showed negative. So I lucked out. Hope everyone else is that fortunate.

I won’t give this piece of crap in the Oral Office any credence, but when you get a physical, I believe they DO already test your blood for HIV as part of the battery of tests. But I’m not going to go out and have this done because of his pathetic proclamations.

Dang it, he's a creepy weirdo. "Stigma"? "Discrimination"? People without any discrimination when making choices in life (what to eat, drink, where to go, whether to have sex/not to have sex, get married or not and to whom, whether to take drugs/not take drugs etc) live short, miserable filthy lives.

Acting as though everyone is equally "at risk" for catching AIDS is not only untrue, it is dangerous - the specific acts that are much, much more likely to spread AIDS should be described and listed so young people see exactly what is dangerous and what isn't.

But of course the people who brought us "We're all going to get AIDS" don't want to admit that it is primarily a homosexual disease.
