Jon Kyl walks back White House border story
The Washington Post ^ | June 25, 2010; 4:54 PM ET | Rachel Weiner

Posted on 06/25/2010 8:36:51 PM PDT by Bratch

Earlier this week, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) caused a stir when he was quoted saying that President Obama personally told him the administration will not support stricter border enforcement until Republicans back broad immigration reform. The White House denied the claim. Now Kyl is saying that's not what he meant.

Now, Kyl is diluting his comments slightly to say “LIBERALS are holding the border hostage,” instead of “Omoslem TOLD ME he’s holding the border hostage.”

Doesn’t matter, since every time the WH denies they’re holding it hostage, their next sentence is “AND WE’RE HOLDING IT HOSTAGE UNTIL WE LEGALIZE 20 MILLION ILLEGALS.”

Two possibilities, maybe 3

1) Kyl lied outright - and now we (the taxpayers) have even less reason to trust ANYone in CONgress

2) Kyl was paid off the back down

3) The administration has something on Kyl and forced him to back down.

None are palatable, a couple are criminal....

Kyl should take at least $100,000 of his campaign funds and produce a commercial publicly apologizing to Obama. Damn, he should strip naked, don sack cloth and ashes- and then apologize on TV. What an idiot!

I don't think for a minute Kyl was "paid" or "bribed" into changing his story. Too easily traced.

I believe he was threatened in some way. The Chicago Way is to find the weak spot and bore right into it with thinly-veiled threats.

The only other logical answer is that Rahm took Kyl aside and told him the session had been taped and either Kyl recants or that part of the tape will be released.

I firmly believe that the paranoid Oval Office is wired for all meetings and that the fly on Obama's lip is actually a bug.

Why is this then, being posted on a WaPo blog and absolutely nothing on NR?

And don’t the “quotes” seem a bit chopped up ?

I read the article and Kyl’s only “walking it back” very slightly. He’s still saying that Obama told him if Obama secures the border then Republicans won’t have any reason to vote for “Comprehensive Immigration Reform.” That part of his original statement hasn’t changed. The part he changed appears to be that now he’s not saying the administration is holding border security hostage, but instead he’s saying the left is holding it hostage in a political sense. It’s a relatively small change in his statement and doesn’t change the significance of what Obama said, but just tries to say that the administration isn’t intentionally not securing the border. Instead he’s saying that the left is peventing the administration politically from doing more to secure the border.

The WaPo is trying to turn this into a significant mistake by Kyl, which it isn’t. This is a slight change in Kyl’s statement and it’s not going to cause any problem for Republicans in November.

this is all I could find at NR....

Kyl: Obama Did Not Consult on Border Funds

Earlier this week, the Obama administration asked Congress for $600 million in emergency funds to help secure the Southwest border. Sen. Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.) tells National Review Online that he “appreciates this modest addition” by the administration, but finds it odd that the “administration did not consult with us” about the request. “I wished they met with us beforehand,” he says, “so they could explain to us what they want to spend the millions on.” The funds “are welcome,” but “probably not enough for right now. I am still not clear about what they are trying to accomplish.”

Kyl adds that President Obama is still “not doing enough” to secure the borders. Kyl, of course, had a small spat with the White House last week over comments he made at a town-hall meeting. Kyl, responding to a voter’s question, detailed a recent one-on-one conversation he had with the president. “They are holding [border security] hostage” over hopes for comprehensive immigration reform, Kyl said at the forum.

Kyl tells us that the comments were “taken a bit out of context,” and that the “they” he was referring to was the Left, “the president’s base,” and not the administration. “I did not try to start a fight. This meeting happened a month ago and we were talking in the context of his political problems. He was talking about how they think that if we secure the border, you guys [Republicans] won’t have the incentive to work on comprehensive immigration reform.”

that sounds more like a clarification of his comments......not a backtrack exactly. I would have to compare it more closely with his original statement....but I only know what has been printed about it and we all know that the press rarely gets it right.

Here we go!!! Sounds like Kyl was given a lesson on the way things work in Chicago by the chief of staff. The GOP needs to grow a pair at some point or we're done as a country.

Kyl may say that this meeting never took place but the Magic muslim's actions say the complete opposite. Good Lord!!! we have a federal park in AZ that we've basically ceded to mexican drug cartels. Don't try and tell me that the Dear Reader is incapable of these tactics.

I think their families are getting threatened, too.

I am also beginning to beleive that most of the “selective indignation” from our side is just for show. Good cop-bad cop.

If we take the House and Senate in Nov., we’ll really need to keep their feet to the fire...or it’s over.

Fourth possibility: Post is making it up or, more likely, mischaracterizing what Kyl said. Doesn't matter, in any case. Deeds mean more than words. Obama is clearly NOT securing the Border and WILL NOT secure the Border. If he were even a bit serious, he would be building the long promised fence.

There were several gay drug dealers in chicago that claimed obama was gay and he pushed drugs at their church. They committed sucide ( a bullet to the back of their heads). A poll in chicago showed that 70 % of the people felt that obama was somehow involved. Maybe Kly had a very good reason to backtract!! It can be real unhealthy (politically and otherwize )to oppose obama.

I did not read it as a “walking back” his comments either. If the Washington Post got it right, then he was simply pointing out that Obama had not used the word “hostage” even though that is clearly the strategy of this administration.

I am disappointed by the many on FR who have not bothered to actually read the story, but are willing to throw Kyl under the bus based on a hit job by the Washington Post.
