A Singaporean court sentenced a Swiss man to five months' jail and three strokes of a cane Friday for breaking into a metro depot and spray-painting a train, a punishment that could scar him for life.
Oliver Fricker, a 32-year-old expatriate winding up a posting in Singapore as a software consultant, had pleaded guilty to trespass and vandalism, which are considered serious offences in the city-state.
Fricker was sent immediately to jail but his lawyer Derek Kang said he intended to appeal the sentence, which comprises consecutive terms of three months for vandalism and two months for trespass.

Wish we could do that here.
Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time (or handle the caning).
This assclown gets no sympathy from me whatsoever.
A 32 year old and a 29 year old...Gee, they should give him some extra whacks just for being a total moron.
I’m generally opposed to outsourcing to foreign countries, but I could totally get on board with a plan to outsource our pathetic excuse for a correctional system to the Singaporeans. They do corrections quickly, cheaply, and effectively.
“...a punishment that could scar him for life”
Please God let it be so..
You can’t take the licks, don’t go to Singapore to get your kicks.
I take it this dude never heard of Michael Fay. Singapore is one of the most successful nations on the planet. Nipping stupidity in the bud probably plays a large part in that.
Boy, they don’t exactly speed through that either do they?
A friend of mine works for Microsoft Singapore, and he tells me it’s not an accident that Singapore is probably the world’s cleanest city and that Singaporeans are among the most ‘well behaved’ people in the world.
no, they, do, not... each one to be felt, not just numbness
I seem to remember quite a few years ago an uproar about this. They caned an American.
The MSM made a big deal about it but most everyone I knew thought it a good idea.
I believe in Singapore, it’s illegal to be seen naked in your own home. Chewing gum is a no-no, too.. Maybe he should vacation in Los Angeles next time. That city welcomes graffiti. It’s everywhere.
Show me a city in this country where it is not welcome.
I freakin' hate graffiti.
Singapore is a great place to live if you don’t mind giving up your freedom.
What, freedom to pollute everything in sight with your "art"?
That was the shocker to me, 32? Grow up already.
I live in a city with NO graffiti. I’ve never seen it anywhere here.
My understanding is that chewing gum is fine, you just can't buy it anywhere on the island. Just make sure you spit it out in a designated waste receptacle to avoid any trouble.
“Oliver Fricker, a 32-year-old expatriate winding up a posting in Singapore as a software consultant...”
Maybe if your momma had spanked you when you were little, you would have grown up and at 32 wouldn’t be getting your a@@ blistered for being an idiot.
Their country, their laws.
Suck it up.
I was responding to another post commenting on how clean Singapore is. Had nothing to do with defending taggers. I hate graffiti. Personally, I think it should be a felony. Currently, especially in the latino-controlled American cities it’s considered “artistic expression” rather than vandalism.
The Swiss will give you training to handle the caning.
I can think of a number of freedoms I would have in Singapore that I cannot even begin to contemplate in an American inner city.
Like, y’know... taking a walk.
Singapore is a great place to visit and their laws or Police are not intrusive on daily life. You actually feel very free there as you can walk the streets and feel safe in the middle of the night. If you don’t commit a crime you may never see the police.
Friends of mine are Singapore Chinese and they do very well there. Business is encouraged and the people have an great acumen for it.
The only problem they have is that the Government builds the housing (mainly highrise) and that you never really own the property 100 year lease. Even though the lease is saleable and you can move up property ladder but scaling down is not encouraged.
I love it there
Mel
What percentage of Singapore is muslim? Otherwise I’ve heard relatively good things about it.
Good. Perhaps the penalty should be having what you sprayed tattooed all over your body in a messy way. Can’t do it but....
About 15% Muslim.
Thought it was larger. So mostly Buddhist? (I know there is a Christian population there but don’t know that percentage either).
About the same number if Christians and Muslims. Buddhists are a little over 40%.
Kick
We've been playing games with criminals for far too long.
A golf clap to Singapore, home of the greatest Asian statesman of the past century, Lee Kwan Yew.
Speaking as someone who has to deal with taggers every few weeks or so, I would gladly donate the equipment used for the caning to the government of Singapore.
If I had my way there would be a whipping post erected behind every courthouse. It would be a damn good way to handle drunk drivers, shoplifters and assorted other non-felony crimes.
Serious deterrence!
I hate graffiti and think this guy is getting what he deserves.
But dont try to make Singapore into some kind of paradise. Its not. Theres no freedom of speech, no free press, no freedom of assembly. And the economy is so tightly controlled by the government its basically a socialist state.
Ive been to Singapore and one thing Ive learned is you dont talk politics with Singaporeans theyre way too paranoid youll report them to the police. Its no coincidence that Singapore has the worlds record for the second longest serving political prisoner after Nelson Mandela.
And dont make laugh about Lee Kwan Yew. Hes a scumbag of the first order. I sat 10 feet away from him a few years ago when he spoke at a chamber of commerce lunch in Hong Kong. He had just returned from a visit to Beijing, where he was asked what he thought about America funding dissidents in China. He said, send them to Singapore, we know how to take care of people like that.
Sounds like the president in Korea during my first tour, Park Chung Hee. He brooked no bullsh*t from anyone. Ate some goooood vittles at the Blue House during his administration.
So, he'll have the mark of cane?
Man, is he whipped1
Man, is he whipped1
As an extension of the "no littering" mantra, the import, sale and possession of chewing gum is banned. You are also not allowed to bring in chewing gum for your own consumption. In short, no chewing gum whatsoever.
Smoking is not allowed in public buses, taxis, lifts, theatres, cinemas, government offices, and in air-conditioned restaurants and shopping centres. First-time offenders face a maximum fine of S$1,000. Smoking is allowed in air-conditioned pubs, discos, karaoke bars and nightspots.
There are no jury trials in Singapore. Judges hear cases and decide sentencing.
“I take it this dude never heard of Michael Fay.”
Fay got what he deserved. Unfortunately, it seems he was already on a road to destruction and this didn’t derail it.
He assaulted his father one month after getting home (he came home drunk and Dad wasn’t too happy). The father did not press charges.
He then became addicted to sniffing butane. One butane sniffing incident went awry and he ended up with burns to his face and hands.
He has been arrested multiple times on various drug charges.
The caning should have been a wake up call.
That was the first one on my list.
We've been playing games with criminals for far too long."
I'm for it too. This sort of punishment for crime is needed here in America.
I remember taking a taxi there and asking the driver if I could have a smoke...he told me that'd be fine, but to not get spotted chewing any gum.
