No Sex Please, We’re Middle Class By CAMILLE PAGLIA Published: June 25, 2010

WILL women soon have a Viagra of their own? Although a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recently rejected an application to market the drug flibanserin in the United States for women with low libido, it endorsed the potential benefits and urged further research. Several pharmaceutical companies are reported to be well along in the search for such a drug.

Chemicals being used to enhance “sex” are not going to replace the EMOTION that makes sex worthwhile and wonderful. It will be another hollow experience emotionally and only satisfy the PHYSICAL aspect of sex.

American actresses have desexualized themselves, confusing sterile athleticism with female power. Their current Pilates-honed look is taut and tense — a boy’s thin limbs and narrow hips combined with amplified breasts.

I find rock-hard six-pack abs on a woman to be horrifying to look at. And I doubt I could ever be interested in a woman who could bench-press ... me.

Conversely, I can’t stand looking at men in baggy pants while wearing a long shirt.

I love my man in a pair of snug fitting Wrangler Jeans and a skin tight T Shirt.

Now, that’s yummy to look at!

Why would women need Viagra? They don’t need to have an erection to have sex. Viagra doesn’t increase sex drive in men, it merely makes it possible for that drive to express itself with an erection. In fact Doctors will tell you Viagra won’t work if you don’t have the desire. So, calling this a female Viagra is just stupid.

but it could be helpful to those couples who have the emotional connection but not the physical drive due to some kind of chemical imbalance...

Actually Camille Paglia is a very astute observer of social attitudes. She has her own take on them, to be sure, but her writing is not quite as ‘precious’ as Peggy Noonan’s usually gets.

Here's what Camille doesn't get.

Between husband and wife both working jobs, ferrying kids to and from soccer, football, baseball, play dates, ad infinitum, cooking meals, cleaning the home, when is a couple supposed to find the time to just relax, enjoy each others company, and let nature take it's course?

I don't know where Camille gets her information about 'middle class' prudery, but I can definetely tell her she needs to get out more and mingle with the hoi polloi.

Mrs. L and I make it a point to set aside some time once or twice a week that's just for us. Even if it's a bottle of champagne, a movie, and popcorn in bed it's OUR time to do a bit of, ahem, reconnecting as it were.

I know this will shock some on the forum, but sex is an important part of our relationship. One day we'll be laying in some old folks home or hospital sucking in our last breaths and the last thing we want to do is look back at all of the times we could have jumped each others bones but didn't.

You only go around once, folks. But if you do it right, once is enough.

There was once a guy who owned a talking dog. One day he needed a newspaper, so he gave the dog a ten dollar bill and told him to go buy one. He waited 15 minutes, then a half hour, then an hour, but the dog didn't return. Worried, he put on his coat and went out to see what was wrong. A block down the street he saw his valuable dog, humping a female poodle.

"Spot!" he cried, "you've never done this!"

"Yeah," said the dog, "but I've never had money!"

“Article is spot on. Paglia is one lib who gets it.”

Perhaps. But, methinks she overanalyzes everything that has to do with sex. That’s why her writing is considered to be provocative and bold.

What if it is a simple matter of all the Boomers getting older? There is a natural decline in just about everything as one ages, including interest in sex. Now, that is not true of everyone, of course, so please don’t post about all the 70-something hotties you know. Whether people choose to accpet it or not, gray hair and wrinkles are not the only things that happen as we age. No matter how hard we try to stop the changes that come with age (or medical science tries), there is no fountain of youth that will restore our bodies to a youthful state.

One doctor who was asked about this issue had the honesty to say so. As women go through menopause and fertility ends, he said, there is a distinct decline in a woman’s sexual desire. It’s a natual process; not a disease.

“Yeah, so? You gotta problem with that? “

I suppose I am spoiled.

My spouse is fabulous!

I would NEVER be satisfied with just the physical aspect of sex. It is the EMOTIONAL aspect of sex, that makes it “out of this world”. So personally speaking, not having the EMOTIONAL aspect of sex, would be too mechanical for me - I'm spoiled ... I have the best of BOTH WORLDS - PHYSICAL and EMOTIONAL!

Let me know when they get it perfected - that is odorless, colorless, tasteless, and readily soluble in liquids. Some side effects are permitted (like short-term memory loss).

"Women want only the number of kids that they can bring to successful adulthood. When times get tight or more expensive fewer kids get born."

What you're saying seems to be reasonable assumption on both the "common sense" and "intuitive" level, except for one thing; it's not true.

Historically, it's when incomes go UP, food-per-person goes UP, availability of post-secondary education goes UP, that birthrates plunge and childbearing bottoms out. Odd, I know.

Take a look at this: New York City's borough of Manhattan is the richest county in the United States. In particular, ZIP code 10021 on Manhattan's Upper East Side, with over 100,000 inhabitants and a per capita income of over $90,000, has one of the largest concentrations of extreme wealth in the United States. But fertility is far lower in Manhattan (1.3) than in Mexico City (2.22) and lower in Mexico City than in Iraq (4.1).

If you look at a chart showing world fertility rates (link) you find the opposite of what you would predict: the richer the country gets, the lower the fertility rate drops. Fertility is been dropping all over the world since 1970 or so, just as literacy and education become universal and over-all nutritional sufficiency is attained (with the main nutrition-related problems being obesity and diabetes.)

So in fact, when people get wealthy and well-fed, far fewer kids get born.

And the bottom 30 nations on this chart probably won't even exist as independent ethnic entities 60 years from now.

They'll be taken over by more-fertile immigration and invasion.

That is a Straw Man argument. People in subsistence agrecultural societies have a lot of kids to support their life style. Women on the upper East Side of Manhattan don't want to because it might ruin their figures.

As you pointed out as the COST of living goes up the kids go down, why? In Europe people cannot afford to have kids, getting the same way here.

Alot of that depends on the particular woman's definition of "successful", which may explain the varying birth rates between upper middle class and underclass women.
