I’m not aware of one decision/award that hasn’t been overturned on appeal.

A better paper on the general notion, expanded to other Goo-Goo/Criminal interests.

Just more libertarians seeing boogeymen. I’m sorry, but none of this seems credible to me in the least.

I know a lot (a LOT) of Baptist/evangelical/fundamentalist pastors and laymen. Practically NONE of them have any interest whatsoever in banning alcohol/cigarettes/moral evil du jour, for reasons I stated above in other posts. Cato’s view of religious conservatives seems to be stuck in a late 19th century “Temperance Movement” mindset, though most everybody recognises that it was a huge mistake, and most don’t have any desire to repeat it.

Have these people heard of property rights?

Huh, what’s that? What did I just type?

It’s not about Baptists.

I’m a non-smoker; in fact, I hate being around smoking BUT...

what ever happened to the “Land of the Free?”

Where in the US Constitution does the federal gub-mint have the power to make smoking illegal? Where?

Without a legal basis, such as change to the Constitution, 80% of the populace could want to outlaw it but that still doesn’t make it legal.

Most religious conservatives I know (myself included), while personally disapproving of things like smoking, drinking, and the like, also realise that the big government that can come in and tell you that you can't drink booze is the same one that can come in and tell you what you can and can't preach in your church.

This deserves to be repeated.

Not necessarily, more like, but sooner or later, libertarians find a way to make that application.

” What’s funny is that, while I’m not sure I’d go all the way to full legalisation, I definitely think we ought to consider decriminalisation (should pot smokers really spend years in jail, right along side the murderers and rapists?)”

It was decriminalized in PRACTICE years ago.

The cops don’t bust people in or out of their home anymore. Not unless they have a pound of it. You cannot show me a pot smoker who has spent even one year in jail.

that would be an interesting study.

non-smoker here. Pot should not be legalised, smoking should be legalised.

Does anybody know what happened to the FReeper “She Lion”? She was a hard core smoker who always went ballistic in these smoking threads. She would rant and rave that hell or high water or the gummint wasn’t going to stop her from smoking!
