Ten arrested in US on charges of spying for Russia
BBC ^ | Monday, 28 June 2010

Posted on 06/28/2010 3:25:59 PM PDT by Bad~Rodeo

Ten people have been arrested in the United States for allegedly spying for the Russian government.

The US Department of Justice said they were held for allegedly carrying out "long-term, 'deep-cover' assignments" on US soil.

They have been charged with conspiracy to act as unlawful agents of a foreign government, a crime which carries up to five years in prison.

An 11th suspect remains at large, according to justice officials.

Money laundering

The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Washington says it is a story of Cold War-era espionage with the tools and technology of the 21st Century.

The alleged agents were trained by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and sent to the US to infiltrate policy-making circles and collect information, according to court papers filed in US District Court for the southern district of New York.

Some of them had been living in the country under false identities since the early 1990s, using codes and and engaging in advanced computer operations, including posting apparently innocent pictures on the internet which contained detailed texts, investigators say.

The FBI also reported observing older techniques, such as money being buried next to a beer-bottle marker and "brush pasts" in parks.

"You were sent to USA for long-term service trip," says one purported message to two of the suspects that was intercepted by US intelligence. "Your education, bank accounts, car, house etc - all these serve one goal: fulfil your main mission, ie to search and develop ties in policymaking circles in US and send intels."

They allegedly got close to a scientist involved in designing bunker-busting bombs and a top former intelligence official.

Five of the suspects will appear later in a Manhattan

I believe that a ‘brush past’ is where two people ‘brush past’ each other while exchanging briefcases.

Yup.I can't imagine a single RAT in the House *or* Senate that wouldn't say "this doesn't rise to the level of an impeachable offense" or "hey,it's only espionage".

I'm not at all surprised to hear there are Russian spies in the US. What surprised me were the penalties stated in the article, 5 years and 20 years...whatever happened to the old firing squad method of dealing with spies?

Brush past is a hand to hand handoff. Two agents brushing into each other and making an exchange.

Very rare. Most exchanges are dead drops so as to keep “cells” separate and safe.

BBC ran a really good spycraft reality show a few years back - worth seeking out if you have interest in the subject. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spy_%28TV_series%29

"Donald Howard Heathfield"

"......met a former high-ranking US government official to discuss "research programmes on small yield high penetration nuclear devices." UKTelegraph

Wonder who the official was..how they even got to him..

I love this stuff!!!

The Sopranos, in that later shows, showed an influx of Russians with mob experience moving in.

This timing (?)also continues to make Obama look like a real Putz after embracing "his Russian counterpart" Dimitry Medvedev & calling him a "solid and reliable partner" while taking him out for a burger!!!! Meanwhile alienating our allies-France, England, Israel...Poland - especially upset over Obama desire to win favors with Moscow by canceling the US missile shield system and lack of appreciation of their military contributions, while also suffering casualties, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This bust only scraped the tip of the iceberg as far as this problem is concerned. There are likely tens of thousands of Russian and other agents in this country right now.

I suggest you find out what J.R. Nyquist has to say, he's been writing about Russian moles for many many many years. I think he writes for an online publication called FINANCIAL SENSE -- it will be very interesting to read his articles about all this.

Years ago I believe his website had a chatboard, but I have no idea if it still exists.

Russian spies less active during Obama administration... [oh yeah?]

The Czech Republic’s Military Intelligence Service said in its annual report on Tuesday that Russian agents have reduced their activities in the country since US President Barack Obama abandoned Bush-era plans for missile defense systems in Eastern Europe.-June 4, 2010

One report, VZ was able to establish that the two Russian embassy officials “tried to develop close ties with people from the Czech Defense Ministry and [had] shown a particular interest in the planned construction of a US radar base on Czech soil...temporarily shelved ..Source 08/19/2009

The Russians do to. The Russians are said to have penetrated deep into the Pentagon, defense contractors, and other sensitive areas, including the civilian government and even Congressmen.

The Russians and Chinese both know what they are doing, and even cooperate on some levels in this espionage.

My dad was an engineer for a missile co. back in the Cold War of the 60s. He worked in the underground missile silos. He said that Russians would come to the bases pretending to be agricultural workers. He laughed about how they were so obvious.

An observation...somewhere around 1995...while still in the Air Force...I began to notice AF guys coming up who were married to Russian wives. At Ramstein, by 2000, I’d make a guess that a minimum of forty guys were married to Russian women. I could stand in the commissary...and from fifty feet away...note most of these Russian wives (all around 6 ft tall and dressed in some provocative fashion). I would make a guess throughout the Army and Air Force today...there are at least 1,000 guys married to Russian women.

The odds of forty of them being sleepers? I’d guess better than fifty-fifty chance.

UNSCOM inspector-turned anti- Iraq war zealot Scott Ritter dumped his original wife for a Russian gal, IIRC. He met here while in the former USSR doing inspections on some base, she was a translator or some such thing.

I’d like to know how many were actually Russians and how many were Russian nationals and how many were Americans.

I saw that the 11th man arrested in Cyprus was a Canadian and that one attractive young woman with a last name of Chapman was a Russian Nat’l.
