National Review sells out (was threatened?) and endorses McCain
Intellectual Conservative ^ | June 28th, 2010 | Rachel Alexander

What has happened to National Review? The magazine started by William F. Buckley that once stood for conservative libertarian principles has gone out of its way twice now to endorse liberal Republican John McCain for Senate in the Republican primary over the very conservative JD Hayworth. Hayworth has a lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union of 98% over his 12 years in Congress; the same lifetime rating as the most conservative Senator in Congress, Jim DeMint. McCain has an 81% lifetime rating. JD clearly comes from the conservative wing of the Republican Party, McCain comes from the liberal wing. It is peculiar why National Review, the magazine for conservatives, would endorse the liberal Republican who has made a career out of opposing the conservative principles of the Republican Party, which he spins by calling himself a "maverick;" instead of the plainly obvious "liberal."

Who cares why some people back McCain? Do the right thing regardless of what the media types do.

Money is key.

Rich Republicans who despise true conservatives drive the subscription base of magz such as National Review and newspapers such as the WSJ.

Since conservatives are National Review’s main audience and since we already know what a laughingstock McLame is, I doubt that their endorsement will have any effect. I am more worried about the State Controlled Media and their effect on the daffy independent voters.

I read that editorial today...bear in mind that NRO has been in the tank for Romney just about forever, and he and the rest of the RINOs are scared to death of the conservative wave in the country.

Both Romney and McCain have plenty of money and Romney donated to a NRO organization during the '08 campaign...follow the money.

McCain has an 81% lifetime rating.

The 81% doesn't make McAmnesty's rating as Conservative as it appears.

pffftt....
Are these 'endorsements' worth anything at all???
I know I find my San Jose Mercury News endorsements very valuable -- just because they give me a good idea of how NOT to vote (every now and then they'll mess with my mind -- but they're a good weather vane where 90+% of the time I can count on them on giving an endorsement that would cause a Godless Commie to smile...) - but in general these newspapers/magazine endorsements are worth zilch...

It is disturbing that the bedrock of conservatism, National Review, has sold out on this endorsement. If National Review can no longer be trusted as the magazine for conservatives, where do conservatives go?

Free Republic.

I generally like National Review but if they like McCain and Romney, and they don't like Coulter, the truth is they probably don't like me.

NRO WSJ . Open border pimps . They still hold the view that their success depends on a thriving underclass. Onward into the past .

All sell outs to conservatism also threaten the eventual collapse of the entire GOP, and their behavior is, also, why I’m not convinced that November 2 will really be as big of a positive tidal wave politically as it should be for the entire GOP. I do hope that I’m wrong about my negative predictions, and I also hope that true conservatism, at every political level, wins big on November 2.

I just tell my friends here in Arizona “You’ve just got to vote for McCain, after all, all those out of state people say we HAVE to re-elect him. How are they going to get amnesty if we don’t” You should see their faces.

I no longer read National Review. I had a paid subscription for 25 years. About two years ago I started noticing my blood pressure rising whenever I visited National Review Online. And then to make matters worse, after getting you worked up with weak conservative or mushy moderate posts, they don’ permit reader comments. There is a very elite viewpoint there that is a far cry from what it once was. We can vote there too. I now spend my time at Free Republic, American Thinker, and Pajamas Media, which are all lively, thought provoking and open forums.

-—”I read that editorial today...bear in mind that NRO has been in the tank for Romney just about forever,”-—

It's worse than that greyfoxx39. Remember: National Review had a big internal debate over whom to endorse of their top two choices, Mitt Romney or RUDY GIULIANI. Ramesh Ponnuru was really the only main guy/girl looking at anyone else, and he was backing McCain from the start.

Since that debate, they have been 1,000,000,000% pro-Romney, and have basically endorsed him for 2012 three years ahead of the primaries.

I am not surprised at the McCain endorsement, not at all.

J.D. Hayworth sold himself out in a sleazy commercial that his opponents have exploited. Hayworth is toast.

I always see comments saying not to vote for McCain, but don’t see much in the way of information about why one should vote for JD. Just because he’s not McCain does not seem compelling...
