Sen. Robert C. Byrd

R.I.P.: The passing of the longest-serving senator gives mainstream media another chance to rewrite history. Will he be touted as a constitutional scholar or a free-spending former Klansman who fought civil rights?

That Robert Byrd left his mark would be an understatement. Our prayers are with his family and the people of West Virginia. He was both the dean of the Senate and the prince of pork. He knew the history of his chamber better than anybody, having authored a four-volume history of the upper chamber, and the Constitution better than most.

He also, quite shamelessly, brought home so much bacon to his home state of West Virginia, the joke was that every other streetlight was named after him. He was, first and foremost, a politician, and his record, his complete record, should not be shielded from scrutiny or even erased from the public memory.

According to Citizens Against Government Waste, Byrd directed $3.3 billion in pork to West Virginia just between 1991 and 2008. At least 40 projects, buildings and installations bear his name. He succeeded in locating the Coast Guard's National Maritime Center in landlocked Martinsburg.

Are we following Mama’s rule here of not saying much of anything if we can’t say anything nice?

:)

I think I can safely say he was the ultimate poster boy for term limits.

He was an Armed Service Committee member.

I sort of remembered it that way. WV is the most patriotic state in the nation, the way I see it. I had four uncles retire from the military and still have one Uncle who is MIA. My brother also retired as a Warrant after 28 years and my cousin's hubby retired a full bird colonel out of the Marines about 10 years ago.

Me, personally, I took my brother's advice in a letter from Vietnam that I not try to trip over my lottery number in 1971 to 'do something'.

Byrd was like a lot of the politicians in WV. And Rockefeller, whom I have met both professionally and socially when our boys were born on the same day, is, to me, the true definition of a 'carpetbagger'.

I've got a couple of other relatives who will vote for every Democrat who ever runs. That's how it works 'in the holler'.

Yeah, I heard Shep Smith say his birth name was Cornelius Calvin Sale Jr. His mother died in the 1918 flu Pandemic when he was just one year old. His aunt and uncle, Vlurma and Titus Byrd, got custody and they renamed him Robert Byrd

Amazes me that these fossils can die in office.

As with most of his ilk, he will probably keep voting, though.

Well, I was being more or less sarcastic. He was a gas-station attendant, grocery-store clerk, shipyard welder, and butcher, before he won a seat in the state legislature in 1946

If he didn’t wear the uniform of one of the services, being on the Armed Forces Committee does not give him veteran status. However, because he was in the Senate he gets honors all the same..flag draped coffin etc..sickening isn’t it for one of his background.
