Rand Paul Won’t Say How Old the Earth Is. (Whiny liberal hates Creationists)

Rand Paul Won’t Say How Old the Earth Is
Charles Johnson
The Lizard Annex 6-28-2010

From PageOneKentucky.com, here’s a video of GOP candidate Rand Paul addressing a convention of Christian homeschoolers, and dodging a question about the age of the Earth.

The questions asked by the homeschoolers in the video: 1) are you a Christian, 2) how old is the Earth, and 3) will you let the UN take our children. Yep, really. And these are the teachers asking these questions. They’re raising a generation of kids who are ignorant anti-science fanatics, afraid that the United Nations is going to come and kidnap them. Good grief.

Did he dodge the question because he’s a creationist and he knows that he shouldn’t reveal it for political reasons, or because he’s not a creationist and he knows he shouldn’t reveal it for political reasons? Either way, this is very sleazy behavior.

My opinion: I think he probably is a creationist, just like his father Ron Paul, because his world view matches the creationist world view in every respect.

Apparently, after all those years taking biological science classes for Medical School, Dr. Rand Paul is somehow unqualified to express any reservations, even quiet disavowal, about the Cult of Evolutionism.

At least according to Charles Johnson, the scientific brainiac who vomited up this bilge.

"I am proud to support great grassroots candidates like Dr. Paul....
Because he’s a federalist and he wants the states to have more say --
and as we respect the 10th Amendment in our Constitution,
he wants the states to have more say in a lot of these issues."
~~ Governor Sarah Palin

"I'm endorsing Rand Paul because he's a true conservative who will stand up to the Washington establishment. Rand has been running on the issues that matter since the beginning of this campaign. He's a strong advocate for balanced budgets, he wants to end the culture of earmarks, he supports term limits, and he's 100% pro-life. Rand is exactly the kind of leader Americans are looking for right now. He's not a career politician and he's got the guts to stand up to the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are being forced on us in Washington. ~~ Senator Jim DeMint, chairman of the Senate Conservatives Fund

Rand Paul is endorsed by:

Charles Johnson most likely can't spell "epigenetics" yet that's the series of discoveries that more or less 'splain why everybody (horses, men, dogs, cats, lizards and fruitflies) can have pretty much the same genes yet turn out differently.

I doubt he's interested in looking at that field of study.

Not that the fundies are either, but genetics is now a far more complex body of science than was imagined as recently as 5 years ago.

Sure we are. There's plenty of highly qualified Creationist scientists.

Evolution Cultists like to pretend that there aren't, but they're just Flat-Earth Fools who will be swept away by the tides of scientific history in due time. Scientific majorities can be very temporary things.

What politician does answer that question? It's completely loaded, not to mention stupid. In Charles Johnson's fantasy world, Rand Paul is hurt in Kentucky by not answering a non-politican question?

If this video is meant to portray Rand Paul negatively, it missed the mark by a mile.

The questions asked by the homeschoolers in the video: 1) are you a Christian, 2) how old is the Earth, and 3) will you let the UN take our children.

I guess every group needs its shibboleths. That doesn't, though, mean the shibboleths necessarily have anything to do with reality.

Take the age of the earth for instance. The mindset of those who attempt to count generations using genealogical lists in the Bible, assigning an estimated length of time for each generation, and coming up with a figure for how long people have been on earth since its creation are using exactly the same approach as people who attempt to measure the age of the earth by measuring ratios between parent and daughter elements of radioactive decay.

Both assume a lot. Those using radioactive decay are measuring actual quantities but have to assume an original ratio of parent/daughter elements and that the specimen hasn't been selectively enriched or depleted of parent or daughter elements over the period of time in question. Those using genealogical lists usually ignore the fact that there are no complete genealogical lists given anywhere in the Bible because the ones that are given are telescoped, truncated, edited for specific purposes having to do with considerations either of space to write or of theological/narrative objectives.

That someone uses one method of dating in an attempt to discredit another method of dating may serve a sociological purpose in defining in and out groups, but it doesn't have much to do with ascertaining the truth.

I personally don't give a rat's behind whether Rand Paul is a young earth creationist or not. Because the age of the earth is not an appropriate subject for Senate action.

I think that the Kentuckians who asked him that question are a$$hats, for the same reason.

Is this the new "test" of creationism, "how old is the earth"?

Most of us really don't care how old the earth is, the earth is timeless, it's home.

Isn't there more pressing matters that deep-thinkers should be pondering than the age of the earth, AND, what does that have to do with the vetting of political candidates?

Looking at the kenyan who got elected as president, I'd say "ALL VETS ARE OFF.".

So, to me, this is reassuring. But, no, it's not a subject for Senate action.

From a scientific perspective, the answer would have to be “I don’t know, and neither do you.” Just recently, the age of the universe was adjusted by a few billion years by a respected scientist, for the third or fourth time in my memory.

Among the Creationists, those who go with personal interpretation of the Bible can come up with different answers based on personal interpretation. Those who follow an organized tradition (Catholic, Orthodox, Moslem, Jewish), no hard date is given that must be followed. I believe Pagans would mostly say, there was no creation, and so the universe always was.

So, the answer is I don’t know, and my personal opinion would not affect how I would legislate.

Paul was not asked whether the universe was created or whether it evolved. He was asked how old he thinks it is.

Not everyone who thinks the universe is billions of years old is an "evolutionist" by any means.

Accepting the clear evidence of an old Earth does not necessarily mean accepting natural selection (evolution). It only means rejecting the literal telling of the Christian creation myth. Proponents of Intelligent Design also operate with an old Earth.

6. LFM - no, you don't get it.
7. ray - 'splain it to me.

in #4(post 23), an example of Jesus calling someone a 'derisive' name...brood of vipers. Others were white-washed tombs, wicked, perverse...lots of examples. Now ya 'get it'? He wasn't calling you an 'evil viper', but showing you that 'the Lord' did call people names...
