How Obama bungled the oil spill: An inside story
Jewish World Review ^ | 6/29/10 | Dick Morriss and Eileen McGann

Posted on 06/29/2010 9:24:18 AM PDT by rhema

It's one thing to say that Obama's Administration showed its ineptitude and mismanagement in its handling of the Gulf oil spill. It is quite another to grasp the situation up close as I did during a recent visit to Alabama.

According to state disaster relief officials, Alabama conceived a plan — early on — to erect huge booms off shore to shield the approximately 200 miles of their state's coastline from oil. Rather than install the relatively light and shallow booms in use elsewhere, the state (with assistance from the Coast Guard) canvassed the world and located enough huge, heavy booms — some weighing tons and seven meters high — to guard their coast.

So, Alabama decided on a backup plan. It would buy snare booms to catch the oil as it began to wash up on the beaches.

But the Fish and Wildlife Administration vetoed the plan saying it would endanger sea turtles that nest on the beaches.

So, Alabama — ever resourceful — decided to hire 400 workers to patrol the beaches in person scooping up oil that had washed ashore.

But OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Agency) refused to allow them to work more than twenty minutes out of every hour and required an hour long break after forty minutes of work so the cleanup proceeded at a very slow pace.

The short answer is that every agency — each with its own particular bureaucratic agenda — was able to veto each aspect of any plan to fight the spill with the unintended consequence that nothing stopped the oil from destroying hundreds of miles of wetlands, habitats, beaches, fisheries, and recreational facilities.

Where was the president? Why did he not intervene in these and countless other bureaucratic controversies to force a focus on the oil, not

?? blame ?? don’t underestimate the thugs from Chitown... they planned the FAIL in order to punish the economy and people of the states that went Repub last time and will not help solve the problem by design. All off shore drilling will go to Soros’ Brazilian investments and the Gulf oil will be brought in by the Cubans/Chinese while our drillers will be out of work... just a little global redistribution of wealth to pay off the campaign contributors. That’s the Chicago way....

Bump. This is the best Dick Morris article in months. What the Feds have done here is horrifying, insanely bureaucratic, completely lacking in common sense or leadership — and it is going to severly hurt or in some cases wipe out 5 state’s economies. It’s the freaking dust bowl on top of the Great Depression.

Last sentence of the article: But some turtles are OK!

Sadly, no. They will probably all die from the oil.

Our pResident didn't show leadership on this and cut through the bureaucratic red tape because he doesn't understand or believe that is the job of a leader. He seems to believe that the job of the President is to pass legislation and create more systems and bureaucracies that will magically get everything done for everybody. This guy needs to realize he's not up to the job and resign for the good of the country.

Maybe I'm just slow today, but:

"...the state (with assistance from the Coast Guard) canvassed the world and located enough huge, heavy booms — some weighing tons and seven meters high — to guard their coast.
So, Alabama decided on a backup plan. It would buy snare booms to catch the oil as it began to wash up on the beaches."

If the CG was OK with it - why didn't they use the seven meter booms?
They don't say why a backup plan had to be employed.

“It’s the freaking dust bowl on top of the Great Depression.”

He is holding the South’s economy and ours for hostage until we submit (Islam means that, you know) to his green agenda. This will also force a huge Depression on us, until we are severely displaced and living in hovels like his African relatives.

Then, ‘his’ people, whoever they are, can take over. Meanwhile, he and his cabal & underlings will get rich off Cap ‘n Tax.

This is intentional.

Hope and change?

No. Hopelessness and destruction.

Red Tape Keeps Prized Oil-Fighting Skimmers from Gulf, Coastline
Just weeks after the oil spill crisis began to unfold in the Gulf of Mexico, the French
foreign minister volunteered a fleet of oil skimming boats from a French company,
Ecoceane. A month later, in early June, Ecoceane Chief Executive Eric Vial met with BP and Coast Guard officials to present the idea.
But after that meeting, weeks went by with little contact as oil continued gushing into the Gulf.
A frustrated Vial was able to get around the bureacracy last week only when his company sold
nine of the oil collection boats to a private contractor in Florida,
who could then put the boats to work.”

“(T)hirteen entities had offered the U.S. oil spill
assistance within about two weeks of the Horizon rig explosion. They were the
governments of Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands,
Norway, Romania, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the
United Nations.
The U.S. response - Thank you, but no thank you, we've got it.
‘..While there is no need right now that the U.S. cannot meet, the U.S. Coast Guard is
assessing these offers of assistance to see if there will be something which we will need
in the near future.’”

Actually - it was at least 17 countries ignored by Pres_ _ent Obama.

30 International Offers Of Oil Spill Support Obama Has Thrown Out The Window
America has turned down help from around 30 countries and international organizations.
Obama has dismissed miracle cures from Croatia, barges from Sweden, and containment boom from various obscure allies, according to the State Department
He's definitely not accepting chemical dispersants from the country that started this whole mess, England.”

It’s so nice to see my fellow Freepers not falling for the “bungling” president line that’s being sold to us.

On the up side, I was just telling my hubby last night that this might just come back to bite the administration in the butt. It took a crisis like this to show many people the reality of our federal government bureaucracy and especially the ridiculous environmental laws it enforces.

Perhaps this will finally be the straw that breaks the public’s back in terms of excessive regulations and all they do to hold back this country from reaching its true potential (in addition to putting roadblocks on the path to recovery from a crisis like this).

The problem isn't that the bureaucracies are enforcing the environmental laws ~ rather they are enforcing their regulatory interpretations of those laws as well as various consent decrees their agencies have entered into under court supervision.

This is not to say that you'd care for the original laws either, but the regulations have strayed so far that the "anti-dumping zone" law has now been interpreted to prohibit the use of porta-poties in boats ~ thereby forcing small boaters to plop it down over the sides ~ just like before.

No doubt the law that forms the basis for protecting the sea turtles is well intentioned, but the regulation being enforced by EPA and the Coast Guard is being used to KILL the sea turtles ~ clearly that was not the Congressional intention several decades back.

Whether Obama can intervene or not he could, at a minimum, ask for the personnel involved in killing sea turtles to be fired and taken to court if possible. The people using the anti-dumping zone law to prevent the use of oil skimmer technology should simply be taken out and hanged.

UNINTENDED? Who are they trying to kid. The intendended consequences were obtained with the help of the alphabet federal agencies.

It’s not as if the turtles aren’t laying eggs all up & down the east coast.

Since when did the rights of turtles to lay eggs on an oil soaked beach outweigh the rights of people?

I do not understand why the Governors of LA, AL, & Miss (forget Charlie) haven’t allied themselves with each other and stand up to the feds. (I know—I am an armchair supervisor) They need to do what they need to do & let the chips fall where they may. It’s time for a Constitutional Crisis to remind them the federal government is of the people, not OVER the people.

This BP disaster was obama’s “3 A.M.” emergency call that was talked about during the campaign.

He basically just hung up the phone and went back to sleep w/ a grin on his face.

If that reality could be gotten into the public conciseness, either with graphics and or a time-line of events, perhaps more people will realize just who and what this person is is all about.

“Never let a crisis go to waste” seems to be an operational mandate for these leftists. IMO they purposefully are making matters in and along the gulf worse in order to further their anti-America agenda.
