Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) wanted to fly 10 lawmakers down to the Gulf of Mexico to see the damage caused by BPs gigantic oil spill first hand.
House Democrats said no.
Scalises trip was rejected for a variety of bureaucratic and logistical reasons, but it has also opened a new vein of partisan squabbling over who should be allowed to arrange a trip to view the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
.....But Democrats have heard from the Department of Homeland Security, which has asked that Congress organize trips through committees of jurisdiction, to avoid having to cater to a ton of individual lawmakers in a disaster zone, Democratic aides say. GOP leaders say theyve heard nothing of this.

Republicans need to put their feet in the path, go the HELL down there (un-announced!) to see what is ACTUALLY going on down there.
If they don’t, they’re PANSIES—just like the “Won”.

Is there any reason they just can’t go down as “concerned fellow citizens” — without a big announced plan and all the fan-fare — I am sure they can find someone with a camera and some press somewhere, once they get down there, eh?
It’s not like a school field trip and “mommy” has to sign the permission slip — or is it?

To: Candor7
Remember: Prior to 1994 Democrats held hearings without even inviting Republicans.
They don’t give a damn about good government. Like Communists, they care about the good of the party over the people.

These guys can charter a plane of their own and go on their own. They can’t be stopped from seeing the damage the spill has done. They are representing American citizens down there and those peopel are suffering. I don’t care who they are or what party...they are suffering. For God’s sakes GOP...take the damned money out of your own bank account and go on your own. Then show the damage. This is a free country and you can go as a group of interested citizens if nothing else and take an amateur group of photographers with you if need be but GO for God’s sakes. GO!!!!!

Yup, they are asking permission to go down there. They should just GO. I could get there without an entourage/ surely they can. There are buses, trains, taxis, highways — and it is (still) a free country.

There ya go. simple isn’t it? Why can’t THEY figure it out and just go. No one can really keep them away in my opinion. The rest of the country has a right to know about the damage that can be reported by Republicans too. Go for it or get out of your jobs! Earn your money for gosh sakes.

It seems odd to me that all this time Obama finally lets the skimmers come in but now with the hurricane they can't do their job. Obama must have been watching the weather better than thought. Oh,this well blows just a bit before the actual hurricane season starts. Just wondering...

Absolutely. Tell Napoleon's DoH to stuff it. A group of ‘Pub congressman should just go anyway, on their own (personal) dime. Hire a boat and/or aircraft and dare the ‘Rat thugs to arrest them or force them down. If they do, film it and turn it into a campaign commercial and let the ‘Rats try to defend it. I say the ‘Pubs should call their bluff. Make them put up or shut up. Think the ‘Pubs have the guts to do it? I doubt it...

What a sad picture.

I don't understand where DHS gets the legal authority to restrict the movements of private citizens anyway. As far as I know, there has not been a declaration of martial law in any affected areas. Has there even been a disaster declaration, or something as simple as a legal emergency (like there is for an accident or crime scene, which I understand gives LEOs temporary authority to restrict access to limited areas)? If there was, Obama sure isn't the one to do it, he's too busy playing golf or fundraising for ‘Rats.

For cryin’ out loud - doesn’t the senator have enough credit to just book a flight? He doesn’t need anybody’s permission to travel freely around the US. None of us do, despite the best efforts (so far) of the leftist thugs.
Just do it - you don’t need permission.

The sea in the Gulf must be pretty choppy.

When they get COngress to pay, they have to file a report ion what they saw, it goes into the factual record. If they go on their own, they just have snap shots they can use but its nothing "official." outside of a press conference.
The Dens are minimizing this spill on the record. Thats the problem.

Wait, 'rat congressmen cannot be prevented from hobnobbing with tyrants in the middle east, on enemy soil, during hostilities, in effect conducting foreign policy, but Republican lawmakers are prohibited from going to the Gulf of Mexico and visiting spill-affected areas actually in the United States of America???? F*** this. Republicans better get some g*******d spine from somewhere.

Why? Because the last thing we need is a bunch of gawkers flying over the site and crashing in to each other.
and under who's authority?
IIRC, FAA made it a temporary NO FLY ZONE, with control over AUTHORIZED FLIGHTS given to BP.

I can understand not wanting sightseers flying around the area, but we’re talking about US Senators, and particularly Republican US Senators. I bet Pelosi would have no problem getting approval to fly over the area.
