Scalise’s trip was rejected for a variety of bureaucratic and logistical reasons, but it has also opened a new vein of partisan squabbling over who should be allowed to arrange a trip to view the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

.....But Democrats have heard from the Department of Homeland Security, which has asked that Congress organize trips through committees of jurisdiction, to avoid having to cater to a ton of individual lawmakers in a disaster zone, Democratic aides say. I don't understand where DHS gets the legal authority to restrict the movements of private citizens anyway. As far as I know, there has not been a declaration of martial law in any affected areas. Has there even been a disaster declaration, or something as simple as a legal emergency (like there is for an accident or crime scene, which I understand gives LEOs temporary authority to restrict access to limited areas)? If there was, Obama sure isn't the one to do it, he's too busy playing golf or fundraising for ‘Rats.

I can understand not wanting sightseers flying around the area, but we’re talking about US Senators, and particularly Republican US Senators. I bet Pelosi would have no problem getting approval to fly over the area.
