Petraeus Confirmed By Senate as Commander in Afghanistan, 99-0 (Vindication !!)
Weekly Standard ^ | 06/30/2010 | Mary Katharine Ham

Smell that? Smells like redemption:

Gen. David H. Petraeus was confirmed by the U.S. Senate Wednesday as the new Afghan war commander, replacing ousted Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, who was dismissed by President Obama after publication of a magazine article in which McChrystal and his aides were quoted making insubordinate remarks.

The Senate vote followed a hearing Tuesday in which members of the Senate Armed Services Committee praised Petraeus's leadership of the war in Iraq and lauded him as the nation's premier warrior-diplomat.

Of course, that's just political redemption, which is rather unimportant stuff when compared with the hard work ahead of the general. Nonetheless, in Washington, it's good to see a good man lauded with good reason.

Interesting tidbit, if only because of the timing: The late Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia was one of only two senators to vote against Petraeus' appointment to CENTCOM in 2008, joining Tom Harkin.

I didn’t see the hearing. Did anyone lecture him, as they did when he was Bush’s appointee?

What a waste of precious time. If a general was not reassigned because of incompetence, why should he have to be confirmed more than once for a similar duty?

There seems to be no mockery or name-calling this time.

No “Betray us”, no “Willing Suspension of Disbelief”.

Moveon.org and Media Matters are non-existent today in regards to this same General they were attacking just 2 years ago.

25% of the Senate voted against rebuking the Move On ad calling him "General Betray Us". Hillary Clinton was among those who'd voted against it (72% voted to condemn the ad).

Biden and Obama didn't vote (although Obama did vote on some other matter in the Senate that same day, 20 minutes earlier).

99-0 to demote him... With his inept boss, I don’t expect he will last any longer than either of his two predecessors.

Redemption, maybe. But to me it still just smells like typical leftist hypocrisy and shamelessness.

Yep, and most of them are the same people who voted to confirm him today. What hypocrites.

It's called power.

If you got it, flaunt it.

What ever happened to General “Betrayus”?

I really despise politicians.

Even more disgusting? Two of them are our sitting President and Vice President.

Just goes to show that Democrats and left wing politicians in general put petty politics above the securirty of our country and safety of our troops.

1. Will the General get the resources and freedom of decision-making needed to be successful? (Assuming a credible definition of success exists or can be formulated).
2. Will Holbrook be helpful, or a hindrance?

He has always seemed to a model of the professional “stateless diplomat.”

99-0. Robert Byrd had a prior engagement and did not vote.

I have to suspend disbelief to believe this.

I can’t wait to see how this all goes.

What are the senate rats going to say to their Code Pink friends?

If McCain were making this appointment, how many no votes would there be I wonder?
