WASHINGTON (AP) -- Initial claims for unemployment benefits rose for the second time in three weeks last week, signaling that layoffs are rising.
The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for jobless benefits jumped by 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 472,000. Analysts expected a small drop, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.
Greater layoffs by construction firms contributed to the increase, a Labor Department analyst said, as home sales and construction slumped in May after the expiration of a popular homebuyer tax credit. Summer layoffs in many school districts also added to the total, he said.

Boldface lie! Change the target so the One doesn't look as bad. Keep carrying the water AP
Clearly, we need more focused stimulus for government employee unions to fix this. More bike trails are urgently needed!!!!
I’m wondering if these idiots EXPECT more jobless claims....once the census work is finished?
I have an idea to eliminate unemployment: congress could declare the month of July a national holiday and claim that the unemployed are really just on vacation...;^)

They will and the great unwashed will lap it up. The MSM is NOT on a deathwatch. They are alive and thriving.
Unexpectedly!
"The MSM is NOT on a deathwatch. They are alive and thriving."
Notice how AP - (All Propaganda all the time) immediately shifts focus to an unrelated issue, mainly an umpteenth extension of increased federal deficit spending to extend free money to the jobless who have already been receiving government payments for years, which of course in no way affects those who are filing claims for the first time. Nonetheless, AP leaves you with the impression that without this extension the newly unemployed are somehow screwed (by those heartless and evil Republicans in the Senate, naturally).
All Propaganda then goes on to blame the "unexpected" increase in the newly unemployed on the expiration of another federal giveaway funded by borrowed money:
Greater layoffs by construction firms fueled the increase, a Labor Department analyst said. Home sales and construction slumped in May after the expiration of a popular homebuyer tax credit. The implication here is that the employment situation would be just hunky-dory if only that sweet, sweet, sweet "popular" homebuyer giveaway hadn't "expired". No mention that it was temporary in the first place.
Man, don't you just love the objective "journalism" service performed by our indispensable professional "journalists". No doubt, Western civilization as we know it will cease to exist with the impending collapse of the main stream media. And if "as we know it" refers to the destruction of the Fourth Estate as the propaganda organ for the DNC, then, why hell, that's a good thing, isn't it?
Other than saying that it "expired?"
wasn’t the number closer to 13K??
