One of the great myths of the left is that socialism is a movement of the people, the working classes, or the poor. In fact -- as Frederick Hayek pointed out long ago -- all socialist movements are the creation of intellectual elites, liberally pollinated by millionaires. Karl Marx was the kept intellectual of factory owner Frederick Engels; Bill Ayers, a leader of the terrorist cult called the Weatherman, was a scion of the American upper class; Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation, is a multi-millionairess; Michael Moore, leftwing propagandist, is a multi-millionaire who has profited handsomely from the "struggle." The Leftwing Millionaires Club is a very incomplete list designed to illustrate this point and to serve as a reminder that everything is not always what it appears. (Text: Frederick Hayek "The Intellectuals and Socialism," in Hayek, Socialism and War, University of Chicago Press, 1997)

A myth is all it is, but I think that myth is mostly perpetuated by the opposition.
Target rich environment.
Many years ago a student “organizer” who was a communists complained to me that it was easy to get students to ‘sign on’, but almost impossible to get actual ‘workers’. I laughed then... and today, it’s still a hoot. Real workers get the scam - want no part of it. The more things change the more they stay the same...
The middle class are the people who create wealth, and tend to be republican.
The under class tend to want to live at others’ (middle class) expense and tend to be “democrat”.
The “elite” class skim the cream from the economy (production of the middle class) to fund their lavish lifestyles, then pay off the under class with the leftovers to keep them in power. This class tends to be communists.
A myth is all it is, but I think that myth is mostly perpetuated by the opposition
Very True !!
What amazes me is how many sheeple fall for the perpetual lie of the left/democrat party being for the common man.
"'The Black Book of Communism,'; a scholarly accounting of communisms crimes, counts about 94 million murdered by the supposed champions of the common man (20 million for the Soviets alone), and some say that number is too low."
Forgetting the Evils of Communism: The amnesia bites a little deeper

...and, to lessen their credibility, the perpetuation of that myth by the right.

the following comments on the war in Iraq
Michael Moore (quote), from his website, April 14, 2004...
"The Iraqis who have risen up against the occupation are not 'insurgents' or 'terrorists' or 'The Enemy.' They are the REVOLUTION, the Minutemen, and their numbers will grow -- and they will win. Get it, Mr. Bush?"
[actual quote from Michael Moore (2004). It still appears on his website]
The Communist Party USA (CPUSA):
"We are a party of unity in action. We are an integral part of every struggle and movement for change to eliminate poverty and joblessness, against racism and for full equality. We are participants, initiators and leaders of every movement to make life better now and much better in a socialist future." Yeah, so they supported an oppressive dictator, like the Repubs and Democrats haven't? The CP is still around, has apologized for that whole Stalin thing, and has a quickly growing youth section.

All the wealthy Lefties require are ‘useful idiots’ - and no question; there are more than enough.
You have to be rich to be a lib.
You have to live in the right places, eat the right food, drive the right car, party with the right people - there is quite a little price tag attached to all of this.
Now there are poor libs, but they’re pathetic - even other libs don’t want to hang out with them.
Left wing hypocrisy bump............
Lol! Funny, but dead on!
You’re right. Libs want it all — to be special and ordinary, wealthy and appearing not so wealthy, etc. It’s part of celebrity culture and appearing to appealing to the common man while keeping an aristocratic distance.
Jonah Goldberg’s one of my favorites - I’ll try to get a copy of the book soon.
Just to clarify, Jonah Goldberg didn’t write “The Black Book of Communism”. He only referred to it in the article I linked to.
