Tanning salons brace for the hit ObamaCare is about to put on their bottom lines.
The thirty million Americans who visit indoor tanning facilities each year are about to get an unwelcome lesson in ObamaCare every time they walk through the front door of the tanning salon. That lesson comes in the form of a president and a Congress with a target on the tanners wallets: starting today July 1 the ObamaCare tax on indoor tanning services takes effect a 10 percent federal excise tax on the retail price of a tan.
The tax is just one of 21 tax hikes in ObamaCare, and the first of ObamaCares many pledge-breaking tax hikes to go into effect.
President Barack Obamas central campaign promise was a firm pledge not to raise any form of taxes on any family making less than $250,000 per year. But sixteen days into his presidency, he broke that pledge by signing into law a 156 percent increase in the federal excise tax on cigarettes (Perhaps the only American who makes more than $250,000 per year and smokes cigarettes is named Barack Obama). At that time, Calvin Woodward of the Associated Press rightly called out Obama for breaking his pledge.
Forget the tanning salon owners - Snookie is pissed!
Tea Party organizers should start posting flyers at the salons.
There, fixed it.
I know two people who own tanning salons. Not my thing, but it is theirs. Anyway, these are small (tiny really) businesses and from what I’ve seen they aren’t exactly banking the big bucks. This new tax may be one of the last straws for their chances at profitability.
P.S. Isn’t this a racist tax against whites?
Exactly - this is a racial preference tax.
One of the reasons for the tax on outfits like the tan salons is that they are in small numbers compared to the general public and can’t cause the government much of a problem. Same with smokers. They always pick on industries that won’t raise much of a problem for them. We have to stop discriminating.
Good idea!
There are a lot of tanning salons in my area—all of them mom & pop type of operations. Some are only charging $8-10 for some tanning sessions.
Wow. I never thought of it that way! This is a RACIST tax.
“P.S. Isnt this a racist tax against whites?”
It should be accompanied by a Jheri-Curl tax.
Put the same tax on bleaching creams etc., to make it fair and equitable. ;-)
But, what has The Situation had to say about it?
Most tanning salons I’ve ever seen were small, storefront type strip mall businesses. These businesses are not known for large cash flows and generally survive month to month in their ability to cover overhead. This tax will put many of them under.
That was the whole purpose of it.
A Whitey tax in the interest of social justice and reparations all rolled into one...
I was sitting here thinking, “Why did the Congress decide to pick on this one business “.
In a two thousand page law with all of the BS it entails what made the tanning business stand out for punishment, and then I read your post and the light came on.
This is a tax on White People.
10%? - Big Deal....
There was a 156% increase in the Fed excise tax on cigarettes and a 2,200% Fed increase on rolling tobacco....with state taxes on top of it.
10% is a drop in the barrel.
It’s a teeny-tiny VAT tax
The “Value Added” is you get tanned.
I’m surprised they didn’t add a VAT to boob jobs too...
Guess the Big Breast lobby has more pull....
Simple solution. Tanning fee $1 - tax on tan = $0.10. Cleaning fee $10. Tax on cleaning fee = applicable sales tax only.
Ofcourse it will. There is only so much people will pay for something like this so they don't have much room to pass the tax on to the consumer. And again, we are in the middle of a time where millions have had to cut out things like this due to a loss of discretionary income or any income at all.
