Two More GOP Senators to Oppose Kagan (McConnell and Murkowski)

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski both issued statements Friday afternoon indicating their opposition to Kagan's nomination. The announcements come hours after Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch indicated he would oppose Kagan's nomination.

McConnell said Kagan was "far from forthcoming in discussing her own views on basic principles of American constitutional law" during this week's confirmation hearings.

"I do not have confidence that if she were confirmed to a lifetime position on the Supreme Court she would suddenly constrain the ardent political advocacy that has marked much of her adult life," McConnell said. "The American people expect a justice who will impartially apply the law, not one who will be a rubberstamp for the Obama administration or any other administration. For these reasons, I will oppose Ms. Kagan's confirmation."

Murkowski did not support Kagan's nomination to her current post of solicitor general, and said Kagan is not qualified for the Supreme Court do to her lack of experience as either a judge or practicing lawyer.

"It is not essential that a Supreme Court nominee have experience as a judge but those who lacked that experience had substantial experience in the practice of law. Ms. Kagan has spent the bulk of her career as an academic, a university administrator and policy advisor. For the reasons I have cited here, I plan to oppose her nomination when it comes before the Senate," Murkowski said.

It probably would have helped if a few more of us voted in 2006 and especially 2008, regardless of how crappy the Republican Party and Bush was (especially towards the end).

Anyone that thinks we can actually stop this Lezbo now from getting on the court is DREAMING. You should have done some thinking back then, instead of “sending a message”.

Any dim wit who votes for this totally unqualified, sexist anti-American should be expelled from GOP.
If GOP can’t make a statement here, they deserve to die ASAP IMHO

The gutless unprincipled RINOs like Graham deserve to burn in hell for allowing Kagan on the court as they will. Can you imagine Lynnsie going rage if the next Republican nominated Laura Ingraham?

If the Republicans can’t keep this unfit nominee off the court, then what good are they?

Any Rino that votes for her is political toast. She is an idiot not worthy of running a motel.

She needs 50 votes for this? It isn't 60 votes? I wonder if it would be better if they made it 2/3 votes to get on a lifetime commitment. Although the only justice to get more than 2/3 votes was Ginsburg....every single senator voted for her for some reason. Of course pray for her during this difficult time. I believe she will be the next to retire. Losing her husband after so many years will be very difficult for her IMHO.

We need someone in the Senate to stand up and make an “Elena Kagan’s America” speech. Put it directly and in stark terms. The media may ridicule it, but they’ll carry it and it will wake up a few of the go-along/get-along apathetic people out there. It’ll also lay the groundwork for the rest of us to spread the word.

A long list of injustices and well-grounded fears. The media may pooh-pooh it, but long lists have a way of making people doubt. That’s why Kennedy’s attack worked so well.

We can do the same thing, except with truth on our side.

Now we just need someone who’ll show enough leadership to do it, rather than just make brief comments the media can fob off as “doubts.”

I am pretty sure McC thinks this will keep Rand Paul or another Rand Paul kind of candidate from running against him. But he’s not up until 2014.

Are you saying that the GOP that we have all committed ourselves too for many decades now is as useless as a one-legged clothespin? If so, you win the prize for discernment.

I don’t think Lovable Lindsey believes in hell, and if he does, it is for “the bigots”, as he calls his Republican opponents.

There is nothing that McC will hate more than having to vote against Kagan. It is in the words of Nixon “contrary to every instinct in his body”, which is to accommodate Democrats.

Same with Murkowski. You can bet she is only voting against Kagan because it’s before her primary and she is up against a conservative challenger.
