PHOENIX - Governor Jan Brewer and the Arizona Department of Economic Security set in motion a new anti-fraud unit effective July 1. The new DES Trafficking Detection Unit will ensure that people obtaining food stamps are not using these benefits illegally.

"We have an obligation to taxpayers," said Governor Brewer. "These benefits can only be used by people who are eligible and need help. The State of Arizona will not tolerate any abuse of government benefits. The Nutrition Assistance Program is a necessary part of the safety net, particularly in these difficult times, but these benefits must be used to purchase food. Anything else is illegal."

If their food stamp card also contains their welfare money, they can get cash back. Which they then go use for lottery tickets, booze and cigs. Happens every day in Memphis.

Happy Independence Day, Arizona! You still have the spirit of America!

It’s not just territory in Arizona that is off limits to US citizens and dangerous to enter.

We have been warned for years to not enter public lands in California and Oregon because of the armed cartels. Last summer groups of ‘spanish speaking’ men were patrolling our country roads in the middle of the night...they are now fighting each other for control of OUR land!

MUST see video.

There was in Louisiana when I was a kid. I was a cashier at a grocery store, and we had to check ID and there were lots of items that could not be purchased with food stamps.

Brewer isn’t wrong on this. There is SO much mutilation and beheading in Mexico that it has to be here as well.

THIS is what is going on in Mexico...(too graphic to post)....coming to your town soon!

“I am down there. There are 2 large drug dealers, and they cut each others heads off.

FACT”

All one has to do is look on FR: Keyword: beheading

It’s silly to think this isn’t going on here by the same criminals that do it every day in Mexico!

Ok, if you are talking about food stamps(which are not really stamps any longer)that’s true, but cash aid comes in the form of a debit card which can be used at ATMs for cash, which can be used for anything the welfare recipient wishes to buy, including booze and smokes, or illegal drugs. Cash aid is given to people with children, the more kids, the more cash. At least that is how it works in CA.

I would also be in favor of severely limiting what can be bought with food stamps. I was in a supermarket deli the other day, looking for lunch, and noticed the individually packaged slices of cheesecake were marked "food stamp eligible."

Now, I like cheesecake myself every now and then, but it should be a treat, a luxury item; it is not a necessity!!

In fact, I'd be in favor of abandoning food stamps altogether and going back to giving people "commodities." Let the government purchase basic food items from farmers and give those out.

I had relatives, years ago, who were "on welfare" and that was what they got. Dried beans and peas, rice, corn meal, canned tuna, peanut butter, cheese, powdered milk, and the like.

It would almost certainly decrease fraud and abuse; I doubt many people would be able to trade their dried beans for booze or drugs! People who really need the help still get food, just food they have to make some effort to prepare for themselves.

There would be an outcry, though; how would the recipients buy their chips and sodas??

Goods and services only, no cash value is the way to go. Based on family size and makeup, a standard grocery package including toilet paper and other necessities should be issued. No cash.

And no junk food. Used to be that way. You got 20 quarts of dry milk, 5 lbs of cheese, peanut butter, flour, sugar, canned goods. More like the WIC program.

You are right people have to have TP, bar soap, laundry soap, toothpaste, basic hygiene stuff. Clothing can be taken care of via voucher for specific necessary items. No designer stuff. You want better get off your backside and GET A JOB.

Quit rewarding them for having more kids.

Not ever having seen or used food stamps, I have a question. What’s to prevent food stamp recipients from selling the food stamps to someone else for cash? What kind of ID is required for the redemption of food stamps?

There is no way to stop a food stamp recipient from doing grocery shopping for another person, and then getting cash for the food. The food stamp program should be abolished.

I don’t know why they ever went off that program of delivering commodities...seems to me it would be far cheaper than what we have now. Now we pay farmers not to grow and pay people to buy almost what they want administered by the same organization, dept of ag.

Yes, that same card can also be used as cash. I do get food stamps because of unemployment and the kids and I do not receive cash assistance, only food stamps. When I swipe that card, it asks, “food or cash.” I am not sure the rules about using the cash part of the program.
