Sororities' antics spur school alcohol efforts

OXFORD, Ohio – Sorority spring formals call up visions of young women in colorful dresses dancing the night away — not vomiting on tables, urinating in sinks or having sex in closets.

The drunken shenanigans of three sororities at Miami University in southwest Ohio sound like something out of "Animal House" and were especially startling for a school that frequently makes the top 50 in a U.S News & World Report academic ranking but never makes lists of big-time party schools.

The school suspended two of the sororities and put the third on probation. A task force is reviewing discipline and education policies on student behavior and alcohol, and the campus group governing sororities says it will begin teaching new members to speak out when they witness bad behavior.

How about this, if we are going to have a drinking age of 22, lets - I don’t know - enforce it on college campuses?

Such a radical idea that the law applies on campus too, I know, next thing you know I’ll want to apply the first amendment too, can’t have that can we?

Nip it in the bud!

Oh wait, that might sound wrong in the context of the article.

Sorority spring formals call up visions of young women in colorful dresses dancing the night away — not vomiting on tables, ...

I guess that depends on where you went to school.

Miami's a great school and a few bad girls should not ruin their reputation. /sarc

I'm betting the male apps for admittance will double this year.

My son graduated from there in 2001.

The local chapter of my fraternity was put in probation because some girls brought beer to the house.
My chapter got in trouble because returning vets from Desert Storm were joining our chapter and kicking ass at the fraternity next door.
We have vets returning from the WOT, going back to college and joining fraternities. How are we going to tell them they can’t drink with girls and fight with other fraternities?

Well, “gentleman’s clubs” are always on the lookout for new “sorority girl” dancers.

Heh, I figured that Zeta Tau Alpha was one of the offending sororities. Back on the '80s, those ZTA girls would show up at our off-campus frat parties and drink us out of (frat)house and home.

FReeper challenge:

Guess what convinced me to join Tau Kappa Epsilon in 1981.

It was the Sorority Girls that made college fun.

While the amiable drunk has always been a staple of comedy, Animal House was the first movie where getting blind drunk and trashing the building was done by the cool guys.

Spring Break was always pretty crazy, but when MTV started doing the "Spring Break" specials, it went totally insane.

Discussion I had with a doctor (around 1998) who was a gynecologist with a practice next to the University of Texas from around 1958 until he retired around 2000. He stated flatly: "If the average UT coed from today had visited my practice in 1958, I would have assumed she was a prostitute. The average UT coed in 1958 was a virgin. Those who weren't were either married or had usually been in a relationship with one boyfriend throughout high school."

Whether you think the changes are a good thing or a bad thing, this doctor, to me, seemed to be about as good a source of reliable information as you can find about how things have changed in the last fifty years.
