Posted on 07/04/2010 8:32:29 AM PDT by nmh
As our daily interactions and transactions have become increasingly wired, we have yet to see any truly comprehensive attempts at securing online identities.
Our complex system of usernames and passwords is astoundingly outdated and increasingly prone to security breaches and theft. Yet, so far it has been mostly up to the individual to protect himself against various forms of identity fraudwith larger corporations taking relatively little responsibility.
But this could change in a big way. Right now the federal government is proposing a new system being referred to as the Identity Ecosystemwhich was highlighted in the recently-released draft paper, National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace [NSTIC].
The Identity Ecosystem would allow Americans to choose to obtain a single authenticated ID for online transactions. Like a passport, this single ID could travel with them online and be used to access everything from e-mail, to online health records and banking information. Furthermore, the Identity Ecosystem would only reveal the least amount of information necessary for each transaction.
To highlight the potential consumer benefits of such a system, the White Houses proposal uses the example of an individual filling a prescription online. Under the smart ID card, the pharmacy would only receive proof that the individual is over 18 and that the prescription is valid. No other information like birth date or the reason for the prescription.

The cost of implementing? Whats the cost if China hacks in and steals all the info?
Just like our SS number.
International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), a global organization that researches, consults and provides training on issues of e-commerce and cybersecurity. Jay is a regularly featured speaker at e-commerce and cybersecurity conferences in the U.S., Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Keep the GOVERNMENT out of your life even if it means the PRIVATE sector can benefit through work. This is intrusive.
Are we getting closer to George Orwell's 1984?
There goes ANY Right to Free Speech
IF it disagrees with the GOVERNMENT!
Why not just stamp a number on our foreheads?
Easier business transactions, etc. is not the real purpose behind this proposed system. It is a means to quickly identify ANY user, poster, blogger, emailer, etc. on the web and log them in a database (later, when they have the power consolidated for detainment, imprisonment and execution). Go ahead and laugh now, I’m sure the Germans would have used this instead of all the manpower they had to devote catching Jews.
Hack? They won't have to. Obama will give them access if they'll finance more of his stupid ideas.
This ain’t Uncle Sam, it’s Big Brother Barack.
No, absolutely not.
Go to hell government.
They always try to sell supposed benefits as a reason to track you.
Come on folks, this stuff is not a benefit.
The sheeple aren't quite ready for that ... but something like this could work you up to that. You have to do this stuff INCREMENTALLY and have people believe it is for THEIR best interests. In this situation it will be to give you more privacy (LOL) and fast efficient access to your PERSONAL information. That will strike a chord with many utopians but for those who THINK, they will not want any parts of this.
Uncle “Obambi” wants you to have an internet ID so that he knows where to send his NazEIU thugs when someone dares to speak out against him.
SO THEY CAN TAX THEM!
It is the end of free speech online. it is already a problem. This will make it worse.
So far, this proposition seems to rate in popularity somewhere between having a car roll over your foot, and having one’s buttocks depilated with a belt sander, then moistened with fresh lemon juice.
But look how they spin it - Identity Ecosystem !
Many “save the earth” folks will LIKE the word “eco”.
People are so dumb!
Just give them time ... remember telling the truth is not their forte. They will get people on board by LYING to them!
How many months/years until they shut down FR and send us “domestic terrorists” to the work camps?
This seems to me just another way for the criminals, including those in government, of gaining more control over people.
Like Social Security and a retirement in your name only attached to a private number to be used for Social Security Administration purposes only?
National Civilian Community Corps = NCCC = NatCs...
The biggest cause of identity theft and fraud is the federal government. Despite what it says on the card itself, Social Security cards are used in every phase of our life as identification. The military stopped using serial number and replaced them with SS #. That number is on every travel order, transfer, promotion and discharge. What happens when a member of the armed forces retires or is discharged? His SS# might as well have been posted on the internet for all the good it does.
And if that is not enough, SS # are used as identification on W-2’s, I-9’s, state tax forms, incorporation papers, tax returns, etc. How can any system be secure if we are giving away the keys to the vault?
Online Identification — Careful Consideration needed
Under some circumstances you should use an online identity and this would be for any commercial business— online shopping, paying bills, etc
Under other circumstances anonymity is important. Any time that you wish to express a viewpoint on an issue you will have those for and those against.
it doesn’t matter what your viewpoint is this will be true
it is also true that here in these united States we honor your right to express yourself
and that without being attacked — by the government, or any other group or individuals
in an ideal society you would not be attacked for expressing your views
but no such ideal societies have ever existed, or ever will exist
as a result it is important that we all be allowed to use a nom de plume when expressing our views over the public net
Yeah ... something like that and it will work out just as well. Only with this it will be ONLINE and infringe on your freedom of speech and be a hackers paradise.
And when they do, everyone with old monitors/towers etc. should travel to D.C. and dump them on the capital steps. Masked and under cover of darkness of course! Or dressed as Indians!
THINKING and SPEAKING about it online will NOT be allowed with your online ID.
THINKING and SPEAKING about it online will NOT be allowed with your online ID.
Won’t matter. They’ll pass it anyway. Democrats think we are a communist country. They really scary part is that Americans let them make their dream a reality.
The American dream is already done for. There is nothing left to “protect”. We need to rebuild the country once the fascists have been driven out or exterminated. This may take centuries just to begin.
With every tick of the clock...
Is this that thing where our glassed jawed cowardly mack daddy who occupies the White House won’t have to keep looking for me to answer my challenge to a duel?
Give people enough apps on their phones and they're more than happy to carry their own personal lo jack. Everybody in Oregon was wondering why police were searching a certain area for Kyron Horman when it was seemingly unconnected by physical evidence. Dollars to doughnuts, his step-mom's cell phone placed her there.
“Whats the cost if China hacks in and steals all the info?”
Just thinking the same thing—the feds can’t protect themselves from hackers and they want us to trust them?
Implement that program and the government gets the keys to your kingdom.
Mark of the Beast
Is this for the children?
Of course our friendly Big Brother types just COULDN’T be interested in what we’re BUYING, SAYING, POSTING, THINKING....NO...COULDN’T be any of that!!! Wanna purchase AMMO online?? Big Brother will know about it. Post on FR??? Better not be critical of The One!!!
That's the hidden beauty of it.
Just as there are keyword search for your phone conversations and e-mails - NOW they will have you nailed for anything else you author!
It's ALL about controlling what you say ... recall how freedom of speech may need limitations ... it will no longer depend on your “motivation”.
Who was it that said freedom of speech may need BOUDANRIES and that it will depend on the MOTIVATION behind the free speech? This was recent.
Authorities insist that the NPR plan, which involves issuing universal ID cards to all residents by 2013, will help check embezzlement of government funds.
The project, said Chandramouli, was originally envisaged almost a decade ago. But the terror attack on the Indian financial capital of Mumbai in 2008 led authorities to expedite it, with trials on for over a year now in more than 3,000 coastal villages of the country, he added.
In India, illegal immigration from Bangladesh has been an issue of serious concern for over decades. Border guards of both neighboring nations have also set up an institutional framework to discuss illegitimate cross-border movements, according to India's external affairs ministry.
For India, the new ID scheme can also be a potential means to detect illegal aliens living in the country.
Maybe ... but it could also be to “save the earth” because it uses the word “eco”.
Fox News wants your log in and password before you can leave a comment. They have drunk the Kool-Aid.
Yes ... we are working out way towards that.
“Fox News wants your log in and password before you can leave a comment. They have drunk the Kool-Aid.”
It is my CHOICE if *I* decide to give them that inexchange for “free speech” as long as I am not offesive - swear words etc.. I have no problem with that and I dare say Fox is not nearly as powerful as our government.
“SO THEY CAN TAX THEM!”
Well, that is one of the top two. The other would be removing your First Amendment rights, and if you don’t comply, they’ll know where to go to remove YOU.
This is way more ominous than any Nanny State concerns.
Be very afraid!
After removing the hard drive!
