Video: Leno demonstrates effectiveness of American education on history

I briefly considered using this clip for tomorrow, but it’s too depressing to post on Independence Day. Instead, we’ll let this serve as a warning on the eve of the nation’s 234th birthday. If you can’t do any better than the people in this clip interviewed by the Tonight Show’s Jay Leno in his Jaywalking segment, turn on the History Channel and try to catch up before tomorrow morning. And who saves the day in this clip?

Funny. But I wonder how many people Leno had to ask in order to get enough with the wrong answer to make his clip?

It is also the reason why we are failing as a country.

How many members of the teachers’ union could answer the questions themselves?

Although I admit I had my own ‘Jaywalking’ moment last Friday. I was sitting in a bar with a friend watching the Uruguay/Ghana game. Uruguay had just won it on free kicks and this 20-something blond turns to me and asks, in all seriousness, “Where is Uruguay? Is it in Europe somewhere?”

It’s one of the Communist Goals for America - infiltrating and destroying our public education system.

I know my children will never be in one of those institutions.

This is not going to be a problem in NC before too long. My understanding is there is a proposal floating around somewhere that suggests American History prior to 1870’s (or thereabout) will no longer be taught in the public schools. So, future generations will not need to know the messy little details that brought our country into existence, provide the foundation for our culture and heritage, make us a distinct people, remind us of our godly heritage (and dependence on His providence), etc., etc., etc.

Can you imagine what Leno’s street interviews will be like then:

Leno: So, who is the founder of American democracy?

Man on the street: Barak Obama?

Leno: Okay, so what does the Constitution stipulate about the role of government?

Man on the street: That it needs to be there for the people, providing lots of welfare and unemployment insurance...and even jobs, if anybody wants one...

Leno: What is the Bill of Rights?

Man on the street: That’s when the government comes along and tells you what you can and can’t do...and when you disobey the government, they can bill you for it...I think...

Leno: Okay, you’re doing great...last question. What do we celebrate on the 4th of July?

Man on the street: America’s total dependence on government to give us a better life, to take care of us when we’re sick, to make sure corporations and big businesses don’t screw us over and to protect us from domestic enemies, like, you know, Christians, conservatives, greedy people...

Leno: Is that it?

Man on the street: ...oh yeah, and to remember that we’re no different than anybody else in this world—we’re all just one big family, no better...and no worse...well, maybe at times we are a little worse. You know, we’ve done some things that we shouldn’t have...like slavery, fighting people all the time, polluting the planet...so, we need to remember that so that we don’t hog all the world’s resources...or treat others unfairly by not letting them come in and get some for themselves...or else we could just lose it all and it could go up in one great big ball of fire, like a big bomb explosing...That’s why we’ll all watch the fireworks tonight.

at the end... you have 3 generations represented. two have been educated since the department of education and progressives took over. one was educated using the ‘old’ system

which one knew anything about the country?

this is a very telling video.

"turn on the History Channel and try to catch up"

I would recommend something other than the Ministry of Propaganda's "History Channel" as a source of information, particularly concerning Christianity or Western civilization.

Not reading your opening closely enough,
I thought this was a transcript of an actual interview.

The only problem with it is that the hypothetical individual was a little too “smart” and could articulate the beliefs of the left a little too well.

Two of those generations could get a condom on a cucumber and one knew who we got our Independence from.

Pray for America

Totally SAD, but not surprising given who we voted into the white house a couple years back. Kruchev was probably right...we will eventually rot from within.

The next time Leno has Odumbo on his show maybe he should ask him the 4th of July questions.

You make a lot of good points, however, your optimism has a slim foundation. Sean Hannity does a similar thing on Thursdays with his Man-in-the-Street interviews and he, generally, gets the same results . . . . . . live and on-air. His segments are not taped and played back later.

Having worked as a teacher (briefly) in public school, I got to see a lot of this personally and the kids (for the most part) are truly too dumb to walk and chew gum at the same time. That isn’t their fault, it’s the fault of a public school system tyhat is dedicated to teaching as little as possible. It is also a direct reflection of Bush’s NCLB (written by Teddy Chappaquiddick) that condemns these kids to learning how to take and pass a standardized test versus learning material they will need to guide them through life.

IMO, it’s time for America to hit Ctl-Alt-Delete and start over with the Constitution that the Founders left to us and NONE of the current crop of politicians, bureaucrats, wannabees and bottom feeders. I think we can do much, MUCH better.

The problem with videos like this is that you have no idea how many people he interviewed for this segment. Couple that with the fact that the people (who had to sign a release in order to be shown) went into the interview knowing that if they just gave the right answers odds were that they would be thanked and shown the door while if they gave a stupid answer odds are they would be on national television. Given how attention-obsessed our country has become it would come at no surprise that some people would trade their dignity for a chance to look like an idiot being interviewed by the famous Jay Leno.

Very astute comment. This is television, entertainment, meant to be funny. It is only funny because most of us do know the answers to these obvious questions. If Leno were asking about the laws of thermodynamics or the Quadratic Equation, the appearance of ignorance would not be funny. Television is manipulation to gain and maintain audience.

And note the pervasive political correctness. If Leno had interviewed 20 white people who knew the answers, this would not be "newsworthy." Certainly not funny. But the appearance of a traditional two-parent black family, a rarity in itself these days, was the feel-good capstone, with "Grandpa" saving the day. Manipulation.

Oshka-boom is right. Sure, education in this country is a mess, but it has never been excellent...besides how many hits would these videos get if they were pieced together with Krauthammer types all answering each dumb question correctly?

Imagine watching a clip of Jeopardy and extrapolating from there that all Americans are savants.

How many American 18 year olds in 1914 knew who the Hapsburgs were and why they were fighting in Europe?

When was the "Golden Age" of American education then that we are trying to recapture? 1950's Americans who ended up ushering in LBJ's Socialist Society and trouncing Barry Goldwater?

BTW, is Jay dumb? He's holding a cue card with the answers. =)
