West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin considers run to fill Robert Byrd's Senate seat

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin III said Wednesday he would strongly consider running in a special election to replace the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a vote he would like to see occur in November.

Speaking with reporters, the Democratic governor said he will seek an opinion from the state attorney general to clarify what needs to happen for an election to take place in November. He also again ruled out appointing himself to the post, but said he had several "high-caliber" candidates in mind for what would be a temporary assignment.

I have heard he has a image of a popular, relative conservative dem. Of course, when it comes to give the decisive vote on ObamaCare or something like that, he no doubt would be a reliable lib vote.

Anybody know how good pickup chances GOP has in WV?

He should be painted as somebody who will turn liberal in DC, just like 100% of other so called blue dog dems. "Dem will always betrays you".

I hope there is a solid conservative with a backbone in WV considering this.

Manchin is a socially conservative union democrat. On economic issues he would definitely be in the pocket of the Unions and would vote accordingly. However, he’d probably be a marked improvement over Byrd on social issues. The bigger problem would be that he will be a vote for a RAT majority leader.

Hmmm.

These two paragraphs contradict each other.

Are you gonna run or not, Joe?

I knew Joe Manchin years ago when he was a state senator. He’s a pretty solid guy.

But I suspect you may be right about what will happen when he tastes the Washington water.

Machin won re-election in 2008 with almost 70% of the vote. I'd say not very good.

Sounds bad, but on the other hand this kind of things happen all the time. GOP can win local elections in CA and NY (e.g. mayor, governor), but never Senate seat.

I’m afraid you may be right but we should not surrender this. “He will turn liberal Pelosi-Reid fool when getting to DC, just like any other dem Senator” line of attack should work, even in WV.

I take it that WV dooes not have anybody like Scott Brown who would take the fight with small chances and prevail against all odds.

West Virginia would need more than a Scott Brown, they would also need a hopelessly inept Democrat to run against him. It doesn't sound like Machin is as dumb or as arrogant as Martha Coakely is.

yes, but Brown run in liberal MA. I assume WV is much friendlier to conservatives, including GOP conservatives.

It is a shame if WV GOP surrenders this. I’m sure even people in WV can be reminded that the future of the country is at stake, and Manchin would be a vote to Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid/Obama style of liberalism and abortion on demand.

GOP candidate should run against Nancy Pelosi and paint Manchin as the servant for Nancy and Harry.

No. WV is still 40 years behind the rest of America.

Manchin will run and will win. And he will run further to the right of the only Republican elected to congress in the whole state. He will then vote further to the left of any vote Byrd ever considered. And no Democrat in WV will be the wiser. WV is a no win no chance, never in 100 years mission impossible losing gambit.

Scott Brown won in MA because he was far enough to the left to get Dems to vote for him. In WV, 75% of the Dems are to the right of GW Bush on every issue and seemed to have missed the entire 70’s, 80’s and 90’s take over by the far left.

Manchin will be 100% pro NRA and get their endorsement.

Manchin will be 100% pro Life and get the State and National RTL endorsement.

Manchin will be 100% for natural marriage and against sodomy and get the family policy center’s endorsement.

Manchin will then destroy his left of center moderate squishy RINO challenger 70 / 30 and win a lifetime seat in the Senate.

Manchin will then vote 100% against every group who supported him 100% of the time and earn an F from the NRA, a zero from RTL and the scorn of pro family groups nationwide.

But, none of this will change the results or the next election either.

This is WV, where the Liberals just flat out LIE and get reelected again and again, while WV remains dead last behind Porto Rico in some stats.

My brother who lives on WV thinks Manchin is quite vulnerable. Basically he says that Zero can be hung around Manchin’s neck like the Ancient Mariner's albatross.
He also says that they only GOP’er who could make that work is Caputo.

Capito is a member of all 3 pro choice national groups. She would be destroyed by Manchin 70 30. She is the RINO of which I spoke. If she runs, we lose her Congressional seat too. Read and weep. She makes McCain look like Reagan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelley_Moore_Capito

Well I would prefer her to Manchin....at least she would be a vote for GOP control.

My brother who in his job travels the state says that Manchin is not that popular.

I haven't lived there for 20 years so all I know about WV politics is what he and my parents tell me.
